My engine growls.
I don't know, it just has this growl to it at high rpm while gasing it. My auto DX did not sound like that. The engine sounded smooth through its whole range. When the car is idling, I can hear what sounds like something loose in the valve area --like something is shacking, but not like a loose bolt. It sounds like the valves themselves as if something is "wobbling," and I'm certain nothing is loose in the outside area. I'm not experiencing clicking and my valves clearances are all within spec. At high rpm I hear the same noise but in different form.
Could it be a bent push rod?

Re: My engine growls.
our 92 accord is leaking trans fluid from the axle seals but the car is worth less than what the repair costs so we just keep an eye on the fluid. its only dripping tho not pouring out. usually it loses an ounce a month. its just messy on the street lol. unless something badly needs to be fixed, i say dont waste $$

Re: My engine growls.
I do wonder if there is currently not enough trany fluid in there. Where the hell could it go? Does it go out as gas? I will go check now...

Re: My engine growls.
Yeah I figured it out. You're right gearbox, most people do fall under the severe catagory. Under that chart, it's an oil change + filter every 3750 miles or 6 months. After that trip my engine oil is really thin and worn out causing the noise.
Also, trany fluid is every 30k for severe, not 15k like I said.

Re: My engine growls.
yeah if you went on a long trip, the oil and trans fluid needs to be changed asap, even if you just changed it before you left. trans fluid is prolly dark black, oil isnt doing great either because the constant hi temps sheared it down to nothing. trans fluid i would say 10-12k is the max with normal driving, but if you go on road trip, you need to change it when you get back. fluids are severely broken down and usually mine come out black like its been there for 20k miles just after one long trip. i never understood hondas reasoning behind the 30k trans fluid change. at 18k when my car was almost new, i had the fluid changed early and it came out pure black with all sorts of chunks. if engine oil you change every 5-10k, trans fluid should be the same. it is just oil afterall and the trans works as hard or harder than the engine.

As for engine oil, mine wasn't bad when I changed it yesterday. On the dipstick it was a clear and tan color. When it was drained it was dark but it's the thinness that was the problem--too many hard miles on it, should have been changed after the trip like you said.
Any way, I'm going to change the trany fluid too. Am I wasting my money buying the honda stuff? I could just be using 10w-30...

Re: My engine growls.
ya true, and autos do use up fluid much faster. honads recommended manual change is 60k miles, and 30k for autos. for auto trans you must use the honda stuff or you will have very rough shifting. its worth it, even once a year you only spend $24 for 3 bottles.

Re: My engine growls.
Well you guys were right, it was my MTF. It's was very thin and dark. I replaced it with some ford motorcraft 10w-30 semi synthetic. I will try 10w-30 synthetic next time. I like to expiriment.
