'01 MCU replacement help

Hey all.

My '01 EX sedan is suffering from the dreaded failed MCU (i.e no remote open, no power doors, brake light on, no AC...etc.) and I just received my new unit from Majestic.

Is this a DIY project that someone with limited electrical background (me ) can undertake? If so, are there any "how to" articles or videos out there that anyone knows of? My Haynes manual unfortunately does not have this job listed.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Re: '01 MCU replacement help

I cannot say 100% for certain but... I think that the multiplex/fusebox unit change consist of all connectors and plugs and should be simple. I would take detail pictures and make a drawing detailing any open connectors. get good documentation before removing the plugs.

Of course unhook the battery before starting.

I will take a look in the manual.

Re: '01 MCU replacement help

**** the manual. Are you talking about the engine fuse box or the ECU? Either way, the plugs are shaped so they only go in their appropriate slot - it's pretty simple. However, if it's the ECU that you are replacing, your car will not start after you replace it because of the immobilizer. The key, the ECU, and the ignition cylinder all have to match in order for the car to start. If one of the three is different, it won't start. Remove and replace the ECU so you know how to do it, drive to the dealership with the old ECU installed and tell the techs what you are doing. They will flash your key so that everything matches and you can install the new ECu right there in their bay before they do it.

If it's the engine fuse box, again, you're looking at a 10-minute job at most. The two white +12V cables unbolt, then remove the box, flip it over, remove the wire cover, grab your new unit, and just start doing a one-for-one exchange from old unit to new unit. It's pretty easy.

Re: '01 MCU replacement help

My guess is they are talking about the under dash box and the multiplex unit.

Indeed I am.

Looking at the new unit it does look as if each connector opening is different so that should absolutely help when resassembling.

Two questions I can think of:

1) Is the bolt on the bottom right hand side all that holds the unit in place? It looks as if the MCU sits on a track and slides out once that bolt is removed.

2) Is there enough slack in the wire looms to remove the MCU with all the connectors still attached or do you have to unhook them before removing it?

Thanks again all!!
