Where to Start?

I'm going to start with saying I have a '97 Coupe Ex, D16Y8, 5-speed which has about 155k miles. Everything mechanical is stock. A lot of people are telling me to do different things, which i don't mind, but they don't really know much about the car anyway. That's why i'm asking you guys what you would do. I'm trying to decide between a lot of different things, like should i get it ported/polished, get oversized valves, get a different d-series head, or what? Ideas for the bolt-ons would be sweet. The questions i'm asking are similar to others...What should I do? What would you do? Should i save for something?
Please help me out here.

-Thanks

Re: Where to Start?

so your trying to go fast or just a little bit faster than stock? if you want to go fast ditch the single slammer and just get a b16, something along those lines. if you just want a little bit of extra power get a nice intake, port match your head with a nice header, an exhaust and a cam. IMHO.

Re: Where to Start?

only way you can do that in your engine is turbo or nitrous. so if you dont wanna do that get a k20 or a b18c then. making 200 wont be difficult with those motors. in other engine it will be hard to make 200 to the wheel without forced induction.

How much do you think i could find a b18c for? Oh, how much hp do you think porting and polishing the head will give?

-thanks

Re: Where to Start?

For some reason there's 2 of these threads... anyway
intake, header, tighten throttle cable, clean intake system and related parts and sensors, check vacuum lines for cracks, denso iridium plugs, nology hotwires, upgraded engine ground wires, lubecontrol.com additives, etc. that will give you a small start. then later you can do cam, head porting, more ignition mods, and some cam gear and tuning. i wouldnt expect too much from that engine tho...
How much speed do you think i could gain from doing all of the above?

-Thanks

Re: Where to Start?

although its a great engine, a k20 is a bit over rated and VERY costly.

i would go with the B18c. its a very good engine stock and has enormous potential....and much cheaper than the k20

If i went with B18c or K-series, or anything like that, would I also have to get new transmission?

-Thanks

Re: Where to Start?

I bought the Edelbrock turbo kit for the same engine as what you have and im wrapped with it good power gains (my engine was not stock to start with but) even on a stock engine but im guessing you not leaning towards the forced induction side of things???

Re: Where to Start?

you can do a lot of things 2 that car. The quesiton would not be, what i can do to make 200 horse power?, but how much money iam willing to put on it. if you have the money for a b18 or a b16, it would do wonders. however that would cost you specially the b18.there a million things in today aftermarket community that you can go with, again the problem is how big is your buchet.
