Ticking sound (D17A2)

There is some type of ticking noise coming from somewhere around the head. I have no idea what it could be. The last time I had the head off everything looked fine and the car runs like it always has but the sound is noticeable at speed. I dont think it is vavle lash or a bent valve but it is def. something going on. I was told it may be the VTEC sol, but I dont know how to check for that. anyone got any advice before I let a pro look at it?

I'm actually going through a similar issue, the only difference is that I do not hear ticking sound when I drive, only when I shutt off the engine and I get out of the car I can hear that very noticeable ticking sound which seems to be coming out of my headers.

Re: Ticking sound (D17A2)

If your valve lash is out enough it can be very noisy. I would check it before taking the car into a shop. You should hear my bro's 94 Civic LOL

The ticking noise from the headers is something different... Its the metal expanding and contracting at different rates which causes a little bit of noise. Its not a problem at all.

same problem. mine is a bent valve. i really need to fix it but it dosent seem to be causing much of a problem except a little loss in power and an annoying tick, so i figure it can wait till after i paint my car and start my N/A build

Re: Ticking sound (D17A2)

I have a ticking noise, but it only happens when I have it in gear and moving. Doesn't do it in neutral or when its in gear and the clutch is pushed in or when you let off the gas when moving. I jacked up the front end yesterday and started the car. I put it in gear and gave it gas, no noise whatsoever. I even went through to 3rd gear, still no noise. It seems to do it only when its in gear and on the ground and moving down the road. I thought it might be a wheel bearing, but I checked that too. i have a passenger side CV boot cracked and leaking grease out. Maybe that's my problem. It seemed tight though when I checked it. I'm puzzled!

Re: Ticking sound (D17A2)

its just valve tap, completely normal. mine did it driving home from the dealer. you can have the valves adjusted, but if its done properly, it will still make ticking sounds.

Re: Ticking sound (D17A2)

Wow, some great info in here, guess I am not the only one having a tick!
I know it is not a leaky turbo manifold or down pipe, I have already ruled that out. I have had the vavles adjusted once when the cam was installed, but it may be time for another.

I wish there was a way I could hear this just to compare the sounds

Re: Ticking sound (D17A2)

i know i posted the adjustment values somewhere before. here it is again.

Intake: 0.18 - 0.22 mm (0.007 - 0.009 in)

Exhaust: 0.23 - 0.27 mm (0.009 - 0.011 in)

These are the only specs listed in the honda service book. it doesnt make any reference to engine model so i think its the same for all.

aftermarket gear should still have some sort of UP marking, actually i think its where they put the adjustment degree scale.
