motor mount question

anyone know how much the motor rocks in the 05 civics? rocks meaning front to bak movement of the engine. when i did a quick test the motor seems to rock a whole lot but not quite sure how much is normal. i can try to get a vid of it but idk how but ill figure it out.

also if i were to get new mounts should i buy oem or is there better quality mounts out there besides polyurethane(sp?) or non-engine stiffening ones?

Re: motor mount question

if its rocking and clunking then you probably need a new front mount. I dont know if there's a set amount its supposed to flex, but it will move a good bit, even when the mounts are ok. Easiest way to tell is to clunk it into a gear real hard and see if you hear the motor clunk around.
You can replace the front MM with another one. They seem to last for a while then break. Even stock.

Re: motor mount question

when i rev mine up, the motor moves about an inch or two back and forth but just one time. at idle it vibrates alot tho maybe 1/2 inch either direction. i know it moves around a little to dissipate vibration. cause when i had the stiffy engine damper/shock on there, i could feel the whole car vibrate and shake like a 60s muscle car.

Don't ever, ever, EVER get MM inserts. You will regret it. The only proper way of decreasing engine/trany movement (short of making custom mounts for yourself) while retaining comfort is injecting your current mounts. I bought a new OEM rear mount and injected layers of windo weld into it. It took me about 3 days to fill it up. But I can tell you that it works.

As for the bottom two mounts --torque mounts-- those are very important. On the 6th gen the rear mount is not being used during idle. So in other words, you can take off your intake, get to the mount, and remove it without having to support the engine. My point is that the lower left and right mounts are the primary deciders as to how much engine/trany play there is when say... your going over a ruff road in 1st gear.

I really doubt you need new mounts dude. My car is 12 years old and my old rear mount barely had less tension than my new one. My top left mount was the same story. In fact, now that it's worn in, I can't say I notice any difference. The only thing that did produce a difference was the rear mount injected with windo weld.

Also, I should point out that bad mounts --primarily lower torque mounts-- will cause your clutch to have a tendency to chatter.

I'm ordering a new set of torque mounts, and a trany mount today from majestic. It's long overdue. My ummmm... engine rocks back and fourth really bad. The left torque mount is torn completely, while the right is intact but it's the only one holding everything together. Point being: Bad combo.

I'm not going to use the proper left/right torque mounts though. Instead, I'm using two "right" mounts. The left mount on the 6th gen is ****. It's the "spider" type and is weak and will crack within 5 years. It offers no real support and the right mount (which is stiff) does most of the work. All I need is a spacer and I can add another right mount to the left mount spot.

From left to right: 2nd mount is the right torque, while 4th mount is the left torque.

Re: motor mount question

heres 2 vids i shot todai of the motor mount "test".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxjg6r-n_R0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIysy_smZd4

the reason im really looking into my motor mounts is b.c it feels like the motor "jerks" whenever i let go of the gas quickly. its more prone to doin it at really low speeds and u can continue to reproduce it if u are on off the gas.

ive had pplz tell me its prob a fuel/air issue and i know it isnt it b.c if it was really either im pretty sure i would have a cel or it would b continuous if im on the gas not comin off it. also i havent even touched any of the fuel system besides the time i was doin a d16y8 swap, which didnt go smoothly and everything was put bak together in stock condition.

Now that you mention it, yes, it might not be the MM's. Check your plugs, distributor, rotor, coil. When was the last time you cleaned your IAC valve?

Does your engine go into a state of limbo when in neutral? You press on the gas, engine spins down the goes into a state of silence, then rotates up again to idle RPM.

Re: motor mount question

uh plugs are fine, dont have distributer b.c the 01-05's use coil packs, and yes i have cleaned it and it still reacts the same. it doesnt go into limbo if im neutral. my engine runs fine...no revving issues, no engine dying, no nothing. the only thing its doin is giving me the 2 "jerks".

Re: motor mount question

It's the right motor mount for sure; I changed mine like 2 weeks ago. Get someone to rev your car up and stare at the actual motor mount yourself and you will easily see if it’s torn. Though mine still moves when I change gears but that’s probably normal but I changed the transmission mount too. Buy the mounts from Majestic you will save a lot, I was desperate and bought them from the dealership and that was a big mistake.

Re: motor mount question

i mean the motor mount by the drivers side it's by the power steering tank and my engine looked just like yours did in the video, not anymore, but my car has other problems still so i still dont have a comfortable ride. Buy it from majestic for some reason it's cheaper gettin the whole assembly and i dont know if you have a 2door or a 4door but for some odd reason the 4 door one cost more, thats what they charged me even though i have a 2 door and i had to go through a big hassle to get some money back, the motor mount does make a difference though.

Re: motor mount question

Yes lol for some reason it's cheaper thats how it showed up when i bought it at the dealership, but that is the whole part and since you live a lot closer to majestic you will get it way faster. If you really want i could post a video on-line to see how mine looks when i rev it but you have to wait untill tommorow because i am flooded with homework. My motor mount was completely torn though and you could easilly tell that when you reved it, it actually opened up.

Also, I don't like the fact that it's just too much car. I can totally understand if you're a car enthusiast and you want to experience a WRX, but for most people it's too much for them to comprehend. There's only so much they can appreciate, ya know? Nice car don't get me wrong. However, the 1990's WRX (forgot what gen) is my favorite. It's the size of a civic and nothing Subaru has put out after that beats it imo.

The statement was more of a direct statement to crazyasian not a general one. CrazyAsian and I have talked about him either getting a wrx or mini cooper for some time. Just there was always some reason why he didn't get it.

I've never met any girls who were impressed with a wrx. WRX's are more like dick magnets, the only people impressed by them are usually guys. The girls i know are usually only impressed with newer lexus, bmw, mercedes or porsche.

I don't believe in paying full $25k in cash for a depreciating asset. I would rather take that $25k in cash and invest in some form of annuity or stocks and let it grow 10% a yr and just finanice the car over 5yrs at 5-6%.

After 5yrs, your still neting 5-4% in interest and you have the residual value of the car. Granted you will get hit with capital gains tax, but i left that out to keep things simple for my example.

Re: motor mount question

the reason I want a wrx is the fact that it isn't a typical 4 cyl not b.c I want to pick up chics and ****...this is for my own personal pleasure. But b.c gas prices are becoming pretty expensive I'm leaning to getting a mini cooper s. With the fact that Im really starting to hate the civic more and more.

Anyways I really don't think that the motor mount on the driver side is causing my issue since it only does so little to the bak n forth movement of the motor. I'm leanng more towards my rear motor mount. Luckly my buddy knows someone in the honda parts dpt so I can get these parts for cheaper price.
