1996 CX retrofit

Salutations; my Magic Civic (355k miles) has had its engine destroyed by water. Well not destroyed, I didn't mess with it after the water. Expensive to repair, and I just want to put in a new engine. I have ~$1,000 to spend to make my primary transportation run. Anybody know of anything besides that particular D16? It mates to the stock transmission (5 speed). I don't like that engine, and I hope something else will fit. I'm SOL if nothing fits, and I'll just pull an engine from the junkyard.

Will that engine fit on my stock transmission until I have the $500 for a GSR?
