boiling coolant... COME IN.

yeah my coolant is boiling.. i replaced the thermostat, the radiator cap, headgasket and flushed the system. i am using prestone 50/50 blend. the car has been doing FINE until last night. the car doesnt over heat during regular driving habits/conditions. it only overheats when i do 1/4 mile boost run. is this a sign of blown head gasket? i hope i dont have to replace it again. this sucks. if this has anything to do with it i lost the overflow reservoir cap and have been driving without it ever since about 2 days ago.

get honda genuine coolant, you only need one jug, get a reservoir cap, ...flush it with that, make sure the thermostat opens up then go...

When you changed the gasket did you check and see if the head was flat? If it warped from heat or removal, and its not flat now, you're likely to blow it again. Additionally, its possible you hava an air bubble somewhere, you can try pressure flushing the coolant system, or checking the water pump for leak/siezure. If it overheats in a 1/4 mile, it sounds like you have no water flow.

thanks for pointing out the obvious. lol -_________-... yeah i checked the head with a precision straightedge and it was flat. also, i checked my oil dipstick and its below the lowest dot about a week after an oil change. i dont know if its a whacky reading cuz i checked the oil level about 5-10 minutes after the motor was off but i was like wtf how can i lose that much oil when only a few drops of oil is in my garage. i figured il check the dipstick in the morning. i was thinking shot piston rings? but wouldnt i notice a substantial decrease in performance? i was driving around today and smashed it a little and it felt all the same. need help. thanks in advanced.

If you dont notice any major oil leakage, then it could be a multitude of things. Have you checked compression? Its possible that your rings are shot or perhaps bad valve seals. Do you drive it hard constantly?

if you replaced all that you say, and bleed air from the coolant, the only thing left is the water pump.

^ i was thinkin water bump. is your radiator hot after normal driving? just sounds like no fluid is circulating; also let the air out if you havent purged it already.

i let all the air out, didnt replace water pump. anyone got more ideas on the oil thing though? i was thinking a new radiator wont hurt, thought it might be a good mod since im boosted too. the oem honda one sucks imo.. all plastic. i was looking at this ebay one.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/01-05...QQcmdZViewItem
so i guess il change the water pump and maybe the radiator. if it still overheats then what? lol.

I see that your boosted, so when u first changed ur headgasket, did u put in arp head studs. If not you verywell could of blown it again because our cars are notorious for blowing headgaskets on the stock head bolts.

i didnt get the headstuds, i was planning to but i didnt have the money and i needed the car asap. this car is my daily driver. i was running on the other head gasket for about 8 months before i replaced it so i dont see why this one should blow out in a weke or 2

Because the stock headbolts cant be retorqued over and over again. They stretch out of spec.
If the oil is gone, I'd find it. No oil will definitely send up the water temps. Check the compression, etc....

BTW, that radiator looks a bit on the chinsy side, and there's nothing wrong with the stock radiator The fact that its got plastic tanks doesnt really matter.

^^ thanks

i still got the oil, turned out it was innaccurate readings. i let the car sit overnight then checked the oil and its fine. for some reason the car doesnt wanna overheat as much anymore. before when i used to smash it once the coolant would boil, now when i smash it the temp goes up a little then just goes back down to normal operating temp. i didnt even change anything..... wierd

My friend (jap girl with a VW) came over to me today and is like, my car smoked and the coolant was boiling. I was like hmm... let me go check something, and I went straight to this thread.

Doesnt make any sence though because she doesnt have any mods or anything. Its just a VW golf. I think she had the radiator hoes replaced because there were 5 holes in it, and some other stuff that ended up being 500 bucks. Any idea what it might be.. water pump? Do VW's have thoes? I think her pos golf was a 93 or something.

yeah dude, I dont know much more then that. I took a quick look at it and the dipstick didnt lock shut, the plastic part was broken off, so the dipstick kinda just sat there ontop of the snapped part. There was some oil that was around that area lower down on the engine. It basically over heats, smoked, she popped the hood, and the coolant was boiling. Her gauges are out, so she cant tell the temp of the engine when driving, until it starts smoking.. man, vw's suck- I told her to sell it and get a honda, but shes still realizing sunk costs... *shakes head* I guess shes heading over to a shop to check it out today. I guess no1 has any answers. Your problem seems to have just fixed its self right? I doubt a VW would fix itself. We'll see what happens though. I'll let u know what her problem(s) was/are.

Congrats on the tires. I'd benifit from some new rubbers but the ones I have arent even halfway gone... Enjoy thoes.
