converting to power windows and other factory upgrades?

I am the new owner of an 01 HX, although I love the gas mileage, there are few things I miss from my old car like power windows.

I am familiar with most older model civics where everything pretty much bolts up the same, just get all the proper parts, does this hold true for 01-03 civics in regards to power windows?

i'm thinking I would need
-door panels + switches (don't want to cut holes in mine or have aux switches, want it stock looking)
-glass
-power window regular/motor
-and basically everything else behind the panel i'm sure.

that leaves the wiring? is there a plug built in dangling somewhere waiting for a connection? or do I ahve to run some sort of wiring to ecu etc?

I wanna do this, also. I was told by a guy from a local junker I didn't need the glass. Didn't know what to believe, though.

Will keep on checking.

i really wish the more basic models had the same wiring harness as EX models. but honda was smart and put only as many wires as the model needed, so no 'dangling plugs' on lesser models

i bought an aftermarket kit and put the controls on my center console.

cant even upgrade to power mirrors without upgrading the main dashboard & door wiring harnesses. seems the only plug&play install you can do is swapping to a 2001-2003 instrument cluster, but matching the mileage is tricky.

Thanks for the link, Rennen.

I'd like to get a kit, also, but I don't have any place on my center console to put the switches (I have an 04, center concole is different).

basically if you're lucky to find an intact civic for parts, you only need

-door lining + switches ($140 each door)
-power window regulator/motor assembly (#2/#8) ($44 each door)

-door harnesses (#8+#9) $32+$21
-instrument wiring harness (#4) $108

the prices are for brand new at www.hondaautomotiveparts.com
altogether the parts cost a bit much thats why i went with a kit

A better route would be to buy used door panels with switches and use the aftermarket power window kit. Same goes for power mirrors... just buy a used EX or LX coinbox with the switches buy oem mirrors, aftermarket ones, or the rare oem jdm ones... and your set.

From messing with the interior wiring... only mostly wires and connectors are missing.. .but the fuse/connector relay box is the same... you should be able to find a connector to fit and just rewire it. That way your not just tapping or splicing wires all the time. Although i have yet to try it.

Aftermarket stuff is great.. but alot of times i've found it's better to at least go half and half.

And if you look closer... alot part #s are the same, EX or whatever, coupe or sedan... just make sure before you pick it up. Alot of places don't know or care.. so they just put EX coupe.

Post common misconception with power features

**this relates to oem parts**

when people want to upgrade to a power feature, they think "Oh i'll just buy the mirrors & switches" or "ill just buy power window motors & switches" and they're set. but they're not

YOU NEED TO UPGRADE YOUR WIRING HARNESS ALSO

your current wiring harness will not have connectors or wires for the feature you want to install. There will be no dangling, free, extra or unused connectors on the main harness.

so remember to get the wiring harness from the same model as the p/w p/doorlocks or p/mirrors.

unless you want a wiring project to do

**aftermarket p/w and p/d kits usually come with their own switches, and dont require you to upgrade your harnesses

^^^^ the above is not totally true...

point made... myself and gearbox both recently bought the cig light/ashtray units... which did not come with our cars and infact the one i bought is made exactly for an EX... i have a DX... fits perfectly fine and works perfectly fine... didn't splice anything and came with the wire to connect directly. Which is not part of the main interior wiring harness.

I'm not sure if the fuse/relay box under the dash has power being run to all the connecter slots or not since some of the options didn't come with the DX but all are also available when you buy it... so maybe most of the wiring to certain options for the car are run directly off of that... and not part of the main interior wiring harness itself. This also would make sense for Honda to do... since not everyone wants certain or all options... and different interior harness made per customer would be hard to do. Now if those connector slots would provide power is another thing??? I have yet to test for current... but something i will see.

But i really think it's over done saying: "YOU NEED TO UPGRADE YOUR WIRING HARNESS ALSO"

i totally know that panel you're talking about. in fact i was one of the first to switch my 2001 console with a 2002

you really didnt upgrade anything with that panel electrical-wise, which is why you didnt need to upgrade the wiring harness. that panel is as much of an upgrade as the storage bin w/ shudder cover (next to the ebrake) & the ex storage bin (headunit) that i swapped into my DX. They are just an aesthetic upgrades.

How are you going to power the accessories when the wires arent there? open up your door panels and see for yourself. I installed EX power mirrors onto my car which are just stationary right now, because the DX door wiring harnesses do not have the connectors for those power options; the wires arent there for the feature.

the mirrors are not blue-toothed to the powermirror switches that are wi-fi powered by the battery. there are wires in between them. the dx harnesses are missing these wires because it would be a waste of money to manufacture the harnesses because the wires wouldnt be used anyway.

yes, you do need same model harness. ok? (that is of course unless you do the wiring yourself...)

----------------------------------------------------

**further proof** listed in www.hondaautomotiveparts.com

FOR 2001 DX coupe: Part#374519 Illus# 004 WIRE HARNESS, INSTRUMENT $77.74

FOR 2001 EX coupe: Part#374522 Illus# 004 WIRE HARNESS, INSTRUMENT $108.93

EX harness cost more because the EX harness has more wires and has the connectors to support all the power features, unlike the DX which is simpler.

************************************************** ********************
my final attempt i hope you all see the light it after this
************************************************** ********************

because i care about members and want to save you from the headaches i encountered throughout my own diy projects, here is the simplest way to explain it.

there is the obvious difference between the harnesses. you can throw on as much EX accessories onto your DX/LX as you want but it will be useless because your DX harness is missing all those black branches that the EX wire harness has.

therefore you need to upgrade the harness as well. *unless you want to wire it up your self*
(i always include that because there may be some members electrically knowledgable of accomplishing this, although it gets pretty complex)

this picture took me 100 hours and a college degree in MSPaint to create

Nice MSpaint!

I have a tricky question. I have a canadian Special Edition (I think it's a Value Package in US).

So I have a DX that came from factory with CD player, A/C and... power lock! Does it mean that a have a EX harness? or a modified DX harness?

that is tricky, without more information.
-is there a toggle switch in the car that locks/unlocks the door?
-where is it located?
-do you have an alarm system?
-is the alarm stock or aftermarket?
-what brand is on the remote?

the only exact way to find out is to take off your door panel and see whether the dealer installed the OEM doorlocks solenoids or an aftermarket.

sometimes dealerships in my area send out a new car to get more options added. options like alarms, sunroofs, doorlocks, tints are cheaper to get installed than special ordering a car with those features from the factory.
------------------------------------------------------------------
OEM Civic headunits are interchangeable. If you have the DX h.u. with just radio, you can swap it with an LX h.u. with cassette player, or you can even swap with EX headunits with the cdplayer or cdplayer/cassette combo.
*** EX (LX maybe also) headunits have security codes to activate the unit.***

this is about the simplest electric-related upgrade you can do. they are plug&play, no matter the harness you have
------------------------------------------------------------------
funny story - a month back my friend Ken who works at my local Honda dealership (he got hired before me ) he had to take apart the dash of a brand new basic 2006 civic. because the owner wanted the rearview mirror that comes in the Si, that has maplights, temp & compass. so he replaced the entire dash harness with an Si harness just for that rearview mirror to work.

The switch is located has it should be, like on this pic:

However I just have a switch on the driver side. It controls all the door. I can also lock all door with my key on the driverside .

I only added an aftermarket remote to lock/unlock door with a basic system.

I guess i'll need to check in my door to know!

well that's the way the stock setup is, so there's a good chance you have higher model door harnesses.

you can unscrew the 2 bolts (just like the ones in the picture) and pull out that latch panel a little bit. you should be able to see the harness & connector behind that switch. if it looks like the wiring harnesses under your dash and the ones in the engine bay, you have the potential to add power mirrors & power windows (also tweeters if the harness is the highest model type).
if you just see red, blue, grey, black, white wires that are just electrical-taped together and go straight into the switch with no connector, that was an aftermarket job.

still the best way of confirming is seeing for yourself. if indeed the car came from the factory with the power locks or your dealership used oem parts to add it, then the harness will have loose connectors for other accesories.

thanks for all the info guys.

I think i'm going to go as suggested, just get the power door panels and buy the aftermarket kit, should run me about $200 total and i don't have to worry about all that crazy wiring...seems a lot easier this way.

xxxavengerxxx

I really like some of that interior, right about the shift boot is that just covering up cup holders?

also does that shutter door/sliding door next to ebrake, do you have to get the whole ebrake piece or is that something that just pops in (i have to look at mine)?

and i'll have to get the EX stereo compartment.

thanks again guys

well thanks! im glad i helped SOMEONE

that lid that covers the cupholders comes on the higher model 2002+ USA civic center consoles only. i mean you cant add it if you dont have it, you need to get the entire console

also does that shutter doorsliding door next to ebrake, do you have to get the whole ebrake piece or is that something that just pops in (i have to look at mine)?
the panel around the ebrake can be pulled off and then you can unbolt the bin and replace it with the bin with a shudder

any knowledge of this with the HX model, which I have and did come with power door locks and mirrors? or do I have to open up my door to find out, which I would have to do anyway to install power windows I suppose
