valve adjustment

ok so i was looking at grey's valve adjustment..so i adjusted my own valves, but now it seems like the ticking is twice as loud. I read on his diy you do all of the exhuast and then go back and do all of the intake valves. is that right? b/c I tried to do it like honda said and do all of the valves for one cylinder at one time, but when i positioned a cylinder at tdc the right intake valve would not be all the way at the top. can anybody help me and tell me the correct way to do this...also i put them at 7 intake and 9 exhuat, the car had been sitting all night so i know it was cold....the oil needs to be changed but it shouldnt make the valves tick that loud...idk somebody please help

you basically did it correct. but did you adjust the correct cylinder when you did it. at TDC with the "up" on the camshaft gear at the top, you adjust cylinder 1. then 180 counterclockwise, "up" pointing to the left or exhaust side of head, adjust cylinder 3, then rotate and do 4 then rotote and do 2. all 4 valves should be closed and have a slight amount of looseness to them when that cylinder is at TDC compression. the rocker arms will be slighly loose. if not, the cylinder isnt at TDC. go back and also recheck your clearances. sounds as if they may be out.

ya do that. some ticking is normal and better than no ticking (and burnt valves).

i have a sh%t load of ticking.....but car runs good, hell i was barking 4th gear which it usually doesnt do. but one thing that got me was that the exhaust valves would pop up but the intake valve would still be tight, am i suppose to do all 4 at one time and then move to the next cylinder?

yes you adjust all 4 valves at once. when you are at TDC on a certain cylinder, all 4 valves should be closed, or on the compression stroke, so all 4 rocker arms will be slightly loose if you jiggle on them. then you adjust them. go back and follow the procedure I recommended before. start with number #1 on TDC. your clearances arent correct. The car may still run fine, but with clearances too far, you will get alot of valve noise.

you are checking the crank pulley for tdc when your doing this right? it should be the white mark on the crank pulley. this along with the cam gear lined up with the marks on the side will give you the number 1 cynlinder.

My car has 69,000 miles and was getting "clackety." So I adjusted my valves today, using Gray's DIY. Some good tips on his links too. I've done it before on other cars, but never on my Civic. It sounds much better now, and it's a bit smoother too.

Glad you had good results. I did mine 2 weeks ago and also was satisfied with the results.

I want to point out to anyone who is thinking of doing this, that the cylinder in question must be at TDC when it is being adjusted. A look a the crankshaft of any 4-cly engine will learly show you that the pistons are at different positions inside their respective cylinders. I don't remember if this was mentioned in Grey's DIY. The valves should be adjusted in the firing order 1,3,4,2. the crank should be turned 90 degrees between each adjustment.
