d17a2 cylinder head dissasembly........questions

ok i got my head in the mail and its got surface rust on the valves and chambers, will it be more difficult to dissasemble and reassemble than a plain head because it has vtec?
ive taken heads apart before but never any vtec ones. also if youve got the specs on a sheet of paper for torqueing down bolts post them.

Well first things first, with the head off the car, back off on all the valve lash adjusters. Then crack all the cam bearing bolts starting from the outside, working your way inward, alternating sides and ends in a criss-cross patern according to the diagram. There will still be some spring pressure on the valvetrain, so work the bolts out evenly a little at a time. Its very important NOT to losen one at a time all the way out. Once you get all the bolts out you should be able to lift the whole cam-follower/bearing cap assembly out as one whole unit. If you plan on taking that apart without a book, take pictures on how to put it back together as you slide the parts off. Notice that the rocker shafts have reliefs cut in them for the bolts to go through, orientation is somewhat important when you are trying to get the bolts to line up through the cam caps. When you put the assembly back together use lots of motor oil on everything, you may want to use assembly lube on the cam bearing surfaces if you dont intend on using the head for a while. Put a light layer of sealant on the outside ends of the outside cam caps, you'll see where it was from the factory, I usually put some on the plastic plug on the end as well. Also, the manual says snug the assembly down two turns at a time following the tighten sequence. Be carefull that the rockers dont get hung up on the valve stems as you snug them down, they like to do this pretty much every time, haha. The 10 8mm bolts get torqued to 14lbs-ft the 4 6mm bolts get 9lbs-ft after they all are snugged down. Its not really hard to figure out but can be complicated the first couple of times if you arent sure. Taking the springs out is pretty much the same procedure as every other head. Hope this helps man.

awsome thanks, do you have the torque specs for the other bolts on the head? im tearing it down in about 12 hours at school so i need to know what torque to set it at when i put it back together too.
