There are 2 marks. The oil is within operational norms when the oil is anywhere between the 2 marks on the dipstick when your car is on a level surface. You want to fill it to the top mark for an oil change and top it off between oil changes when the oil approaches the bottom line. If it is substantially above the second mark, you run the risk of causing engine damage as a result of oil foaming due to cavitation.
