taking out airbag

hey, im trying to take the airbag out of my wheel, cause somehow i dropped a quarter behind it, and now my horn goes off randomly, and im afraid my airbag is going to go off cause of it. so how exactly do i get it off to get this stupid quarter out. i see some torx screws, so i just take those out and it comes right out? also, what size? thanks in advance,

first off you need to stop what you are doing before you kill yourself. Did you remove the negative cable from the battery and wait about 10 minutes? Did you remove the SRS connecter? If you did neither of those, and are still trying to remove the cover on the steering wheel, you are going to be seriously injured when that airbag explodes in your face. People have been killed (decapitated) by the airbags.

You need to first remove the negative battery cable and wait 10 minutes. The SRS has a backup battery and waiting the 10 minutes will disable it.

Removing the negative cable and waiting 3 minutes before working on it is sufficient according to Honda service procedures. You remove the T30 torx bolts and the airbag/horn unit comes straight out. You should be able to shake out the quarter once that is done. Replace the torx bolts and tighten to 7.2 ft*lbs.

well I said 10 minutes just to be on the safe side. I have heard from people that they waited according to the manaul and it wasnt long enough.

There is no backup battery hooked to the Honda airbag/srs system. Three minutes is more than enough. Honda and Acura vehicles only store a charge in a capacitor for 15 seconds after power is lost. Three minutes gives you a huge safety margin. That being said, there are other ways of detonating an airbag after the power has been disconnected. If you backprobe with the incorrect tool, or disconnect the airbag harness and subsequently cause a static discharge, you will detonate the airbag and injure or kill yourself.

To be absoultely meticulous, use a torque wrench. BTW, it's 7.2 ft*lbs. Units are important =) You can do it by feel by tightening it to approximately the same feel as before, but there is no way of knowing if you did it properly. The bolt threading is relatively fine so there is a risk of stripping it if you overtighten. If you undertighten, I'm purely speculating that it probably won't hurt anything. However, engineers specify torque values for a reason.

ok i dont know about you, but this definitely seems like a dealership problem to me.

but if you really want to do this stupid diy: when the airbag goes off, it's gonna feel like mike tyson went a round with your face, and you'll have a quarter in your eye to boot.
