weird running problem

ok so it took a couple cranks to start the car and then the rpm was jumping up and down and finally died. So I did this again for about 4 more times and revved it up to keep it cranked. It finally kept an idle. So I start driving, get about 15 feet and it dies. Check engine light came on now and I waited and finally got it started again and it sputtered rpm up and down, felt like it was going to die, backfired when I revved and finally maintained idle. So I finally was able to drive it home the 5 miles but every time I dis-engaged the gear and it was in neutral the rpms would bottom out to about 200 and sputter and the car would shake and I would have to keep it revved up to keep it from dying. Also I had to rev it to about 2k to get it into gear without dying. Please if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

sounds like your TPS sensor or MAP sensor is failing.

So now it barely starts and will not stay running. It quickly revs down and dies. Even when I rev it up and try to keep it up about 4k rpm it still somehow boggs down and dies. It kinda seems as though it isn't getting enough fuel or something. Another thing, I have about a 1/4 tank left of gas and I just drove it 120 miles one day and then back 120 miles the next day, the day after this trip the car sat overnight and now has these problems. Any ideas on what this could be.

Sounds like idle air control valve malfunction. Check what the engine code is.

ok so I replaced the spark plugs, they were horrible, black and sooty and the stems were burnt. And I finally got the car running, let it idle for about 5 mins and the check light went away. Well then I drove it and it started the idle thing again and engine light came back on and I noticed that while Im driving it is fine until I mash the gas and then it boggs down like crazy and backfires. Any ideas now? Also if I go get a free diagnostics reading will anyone be able to tell me what the code means?

go to any auto parts store. most will tell you what the code is for free (autozone does, and maybe checker).

Does sound like your MAP (same probs when mine had a bad connection), or TPS.

I was wondering, could this be a clogged fuel filter or injector. I just filled up and put some lucas engine treatment in so we will see if that helps. I haven't ever changed the fuel filter, does anyone know where it is at or mabye have a DIY for it?

fuel filter is very hard to change, supposed to be every 100k miles. get some fp60 fuel system cleaner.

I agree with the MAP sensor or IAC, but I'm leaning more towards MAP cause the IAC will more likely screw up if you're running accessories but will be fine if you're reving the motor. If the MAP is screwing up it will bog down even if you try to rev it. Definitely have the codes checked before you do anything cause they might save you some money in doing unnecesary repairs.

iat = nothing serious, temp sensor
iac = can't maintain idle rpms
tps = erratic (jumpy) rpms
map = possible a/f probs, rough accel

clogged injector might be, who knows. Did you check the code??

ok Im planning on having the code checked today and will update after I do. If it is one of the sensors, how hard are they to replace?

usually sensors aren't sold separately. you'll need a new throttle body.

ok I took it and got it read, of course they said it is the O2 sensor, but it said it was running lean. That is all I have as of now. But the car is barely drivable, every stop light or sign I come to I have to just hope it doesn't die. And then once I get it going it is ok. I really dont want to have to take it to the dealer, what should I do?

if the code said bad o2 sensor, maybe you should replace it. Only costs $45.

ok so the dealer wins. I finally gave in and took it to the dealer. He said hopefully he will have an answer for me by the end of today. We'll see. I bet I have to turn over the title to pay for it. Oh well, credit cards are made for charging up right.

What I'd like to know is why did this happen? What mods do you got on your car cause this isn't a common problem that I hear about. I want to make sure my bases are covered.

well finally problem is diagnosed and everyone here is wrong. It is my fuel pump not working properly. It is supposed to be pumping at 48 psi and mine is only at 11 psi. So $550 later the stealership will have it fixed.
