Sanding plastic?

DOes anyone here know how i can sand that plastic of my AC went/ thing around where the AC switches and radio is so it will be smooth to paint?

first i painted it wihtout sanding it and it came out kinda rough. i want to sand it down so it'll be very smooth so i can paint it again...

i dunno anything about the grit #s and all that junk so if i go to home depot what kind of sand paper should i get?

i was just talking about this..

anyway.. i used 400 grit..
you dont want to sand it too smooth or it wont stick at all.. you also need to use paint made for plastic or it will peel off.. also dont sand too much or it will come out totaly smooth looking once you paint it and IMO that looks retarded..
2-4 light coats of paint.. 2-3 light coats of clear coat to protect it..

also remember not to start or stop spraying when yer over the plastic or you will get lil drops that look like hell..

heres another thing. if you wanna use a paint thats not made for plastics.. buy what is called PLASTIC PRIMER... after you sand it spray that on there.. then give it a fine sand.. then use any paint you want.. another thing is helpful is after you sand the plastic either use and airblower to get rid of all the dust plastics or just wash it in the sink with some soap.. that will help keep those plastic sandings from getting in your paint

depending on how thick ypu put the paint on you could proly use 400 all you realy have to do is get the paint that is already on there smooth, use the primer, sand it and then paint.

If you put the old paint on real thick you might want to sand some off. the ony thing you have to take into consideration is how many layers you will have all to together cause it will start to look getto after a while

You should strip the paint of first with a product at Home Depot
It comes in a bright orange bottle,
You can get a spary stripper, or a liquid stripper
The name is ORANGE something or other, can't remeber.
It will not harm you plastic, and it works like a ****.
