Can torque converter be removed/installed w/o dropping tranny?

Can torque converter be removed/installed w/o dropping tranny?
Any1 know if the torque converter can be removed w/o unbolting the subframe and dropping the tranny? Can the tranny just be unbolted from the engine, drive shafts removed and then be slid over? I think I remember reading that the clutch on a 5speed can be removed this way.
