The headlights should come off easy without heating them when i did mine i just cut the silicone with a razor. Are you doing the oem headlights or projectors?

do you have a 04? if so yea those things are hard to get open but what i did instead was use a blow dryer to heat them up at one point of the lights and started prying with a screwdriver.......but yea to answer your question....just stick em in there maybe with like a pan under it.

i did mine this past weekend, and i too have a 2003
I put them on a pizza tray, at 200 degrees celcius for 50 seconds

they werent too hot when i took them out. then, i pryed the lights apart. it was black sealant that was holding the lights together

Then i sanded off the chrome, and painted the sanded parts with a flat black, heat resistant paint. If ya wanna ask any more questions, feel free to PM me and ill gladly help ya out.

If ya wanna see pics of how they turned out, check them out at

You dont really have to sand off chrome just clean surface really good with rubbing alcohol and paint.

they are really easy. Just take an exacto knife and slice around the black sealant stuff. Then once you work a small screwdriver into it, its very easy to pry them apart. I just cleaned the chrome and painted it with regular black paint (not hi temp). They look p.i.m.p. now. Really no reason to bake them.

I cleared my headlights months ago, but now I want to blackhouse them. If any of you have pics, can you post them? Especially if you have a blue car! I wanna get an idea of what mine would look like.

so how many people sanded the chrome and how many didn't. because we tried this before on headlights from a wrecked civic and when we taped it off and painted it. once we removed the tape, the chrome peeled off with it.

i didnt. Then again, with our headlights, you dont need tape. The entire trim piece can be painted black, and it looks good, so there's no chance of taking chrome off with the tape.

but what about the rippled chrome section where the headlight bulb is and the circles where the bulbs all go? don't you need to cover them up?or does that come off too?

that comes off. You dont need to sand it. There's a DIY on this site that shows a picture of the headlight disassembled. Here it is:

It should show that the entire trim piece can be painted black.

Pick up some Krylon Fusion spray paint from your local Home Depot. It's supposedly made to bond to plastic (which these "chrome" parts really are) without sanding or priming. It's worked great in a dozen or so headlights I've done.
