by hooking up the 12v line to the cigarette lighter, you get absolutely no power when the key is not in the "on" position. you guys are arguing about nothing.
the pcb can be exposed. mine has been fine for however long i've had this mod.

Here is the question, my garage door opener takes 9volts, will i blow my garage door opener if i wire the 12 volts directly to the opener?
thx

I must jump in here and say, I tried the 9 to 12 and I think I blew the opener (it was a spare phew...) So I would not try it.
You could always keep the original power source and just do the switch only, Just put the opener in a location where you can change the battery when needed.

. i hear you on the keeping the battery, not bad idea, i got a cool switch that will fit into that opening next to cig lighter. Although sometimes, dont know if this happens to you too, but sometimes my opener will not work. its strange, maybe its too hot,
or its just tempermental. so i was looking at the vehicle 9v power supply as a possible answer. i may keep plugging away at it.

how did you convert the 12v to 9 v?

I'm gonna wait for the thread titled...
"$hit...sold my car and forgot to remove garage door opener....all my stuff was jacked!!" lol.
j/p nice little mod.

Ok, I'm bringing this thread back alive, I'm finally ready to do this mod. I have two issues. I wanna do it a little different and I need some DIY god help. I dont have many rep points to spend, but those that help will be re-warded. I'm at work, I have pictures that I will try to add later if I can get Photo-Chop to work again...
First, I believe all 7th gen Civic's have the same "map" lights up front. I've dissasembled our garage door opener and as it turns out, there is room for that unit to fit up there in that cavity. What I'd like to do is tap into the wires going to the driver's map light. Where she can basically hit that map light button and boom the garage door is opening. Sounds cool huh? The problem I'm not smart enough to figure out is what happens when she goes to click it back off? Will the garage door close? Is such an idea possible? Sometimes the easiest answer (no) is the best with my somewhat limited wiring knowledge...
If the answer is no, then I'm still going to pick up my power and ground from there and put a button in that plastic piece that covers the rear-view mirror mount...
The other issue is the wiring on the circuit board, I'll probably have to ad pic's for this. It's a new genie door opener with intellicode. There is a button on the front, when you flip it over there are 4 points on the back. How do I know which ones is which to sauder too?
Thanks in advance, I'll add some pic's as soon as I can...
*EDIT* BTW she's a 12v not 9, so I dont have to worry about that converter stuff...

The map light switch is not a momentary switch, I would just get a momentary push button from Radio-Shack and mount it in the little plastic plate near the mirror.
As far as the switch on the circuit board most tact switches have 4 leads. An ohm meter would be great, you could also inspect the PCB traces to see which are going to which leads. You could also use a small jumper lead on THE SWITCH ONLY to determine which 2 to tie across.

^ thanks. I have, in one day, gone from wanting to do this to not. I'm not sure how much longer we'll have that animal killer. I might be able to talk her into a new SI...
I did find a better place to put the visor control though. I clipped it in behind the headliner where the map lights I was talking about goes. Then I put the map lights back in. Basically its right above the rear view mirror up against the plastic piece I was talking about putting the button in...
I repp'd you, thanks for your help...

Just discovered this thread and wanted to post my pics. Three weeks ago I did this, but instead of wiring to a 12v source I just secured the whole garage door opener, batteryand all, in the headliner, then I removed the old swiches and extended the wires to where it would reach the rearview mirror. But after i drilled the holes in the little plastic thing i realized that i couldnt put it back onto the headliner so i had to grind the mounting piece for the rearview mirror down half and inch so that the swiches would clear. Works like a charm.
If you pull out your map lights, there is a lot of room up there, if you wanted to snake your wires behind the headliner...
Thats basically where I have mine now, my clip is behind the headliner where the map lights are, then my door opener goes on the clip. Its right up against that piece of plastic you put your buttons in...
Good job, I'm just happy to have it off the visor...

Someone needs to raise the stakes here on this little project. When I was looking for the homelink for my accord, I noticed that you can buy Mercedes Benz homelinks that go into the visor. So, who wants to be the first one to retrofit a sun visor homelink into thier civic? power and ground, pulled from the maplights. Normally I would advise against wiring things this way, but Honda does it this way in the accord and tsx, and I would assume the same way in everything else that has homelink.
here is an example of a cuurent auction for a homelink visor:

here is the search to find them:

you guys like this idea? Hell, I may do it just because....
