Oil Changes
Just started using Redline and K&N Filters
I switched to Mobil 1 5w30 a few years ago, because Costco carries it fairly cheap. I was running a V6 Camaro 5-spd on Chevron 10w30, and when I switched, my fuel mileage increased by 2 mpg. Wondering if it was more due to viscosity change, or if the synthetic is really that much more slippery.
I use K&N Filters, not much more expensive than a wix, and claimed to filter down to 10 microns. I used to use wix.
I read about Mobil 1 not being 100% synthetic, because they use a carrier oil to blend in their additives. This carrier oil is petroleum based (dino). Redline is 100% synthetic, and all the additives are added during manufacture, as they are a small company and are able to do that. At least that's what their rep told me. Redline is not API certified, and I asked the rep why. He said they would have to lower their performance to meet those specs. Another mechanic I asked said that it is too sticky, works well in drag cars, but for everyday drivers, the cold starts, etc, the valves will stick after a while. Another opinion I read in a site (maybe Bob the Oil Guy) says that API lowered the required level of a certain additive to preserve cat life. Apparently this particular additive burns off, and does bad things to the cat, so if you change you oil every 3K, the cat life is shortened. The Redline is supposed to be good for at least 10K, with a filter change in between. I have only been using it a few months, no problems yet. Haven't really seen much mileage improvement over the Honda Genuine 5w30 yet..........
Hope this helps.........

Re: Oil Changes
I take mine to the dealership, but mainly because the total cost is only $24 and that includes a car wash and they top off all other fluids. I have never purchased any other fluids for my car, including washer fluid for 3 years. Yeah sure, I could change it myself for less money, but for that price why get dirty??

Re: Oil Changes
+1 here too. I take mine to my school's auto lab and have students do it.
Great place to get OEM filters is: http://www.handa-accessories.com/civmaint01.html

Re: Oil Changes
The OEM Honda 15400-PLM-A01 or 15400-PLM-A02 is made by FRAM parent company Honeywell.
Besides color and cost, is there a difference between the orange FRAM and the blue OEM Honda filter made by FRAM?

Re: Oil Changes
I always change my oil myself. The g/f had her oil changed at a shop once and the filter fell off...
I currently use a Mobil 1 5W20 w/ a PureONE Puralator filter and change every 4k - 7k miles depending on driving, weather, etc. After research on BITOG, I am thinking of trying another synthetic (Shell Rotella). I drive this car EASY.
In my SHO, I think I'll run Reline or AMSOIL synthetic oil (10W30 or 0W40)(currently only at 1,600 miles on motor so using GTX) with an AMSOIL filer and change every 3k miles or less. I've been known to use all 600hp on a regular basis.

Re: Oil Changes
Always have done my own oils changes. If you don't have a vehicle lift or a pit you will have to jack the vehicle up to get to the drain plug and oil filter. All in all, it's worth the effort.
I use royal purple 20w50 cuz im from a pretty hot climate and a 888 oil filter..i dunno who exactly makes those things but the garage i work at has them.also i know its different for most other ppl but i just use the lift or pit at work but if i couldn't i wud still do it myself..plus u can check all ur suspension bushings and the oil/transmission pan etc while ur down there..give it a shot man..

Re: Oil Changes
Recently got an oil change done at Oil Changers, a quick lube place franchise down here. Got Full Synthetic Mobil 1 put in and an OEM oil filter, only because they didn't have Quaker State Full Synthetic.
Oil Changes
Are the people using 20 weight oil doing so, because that is what is now recommended?. The newest Honda I have owned has been a 2000 and they recommend 5w-30. I have always used 10w-30 (live in the south). I can see getting better gas mileage with going with a 20 weight over a 30 weight, but will my 2000 si be better off using a 20 weight wear wise? Or is that just the appropriate oil for newer cars?

1. I do my own, reason is that it takes me less time than going to the quick lube and costs me less.
2. Unless your running a Hi-Po engine / race car I would stick with the reccomended viscosity. The guys that design these things know what they are doing, espcially the Japs.
3. If you don't keep Synth oil in for at least 5K you are wasting your money. Unless your running a Hi-Po engine or race car, the Petro oil will do just as good a job as the Synth till 2.5 - 3 K, and it costs almost half as much.
4. Studies have shown that Mobile 1 does not loose its lube properties until after about 8K. If you add oil it is even longer. This is not an opinion but anylized fact (see link).

5. It is true, synth oil will have slightly better lube properties even in the beginning, but not better enough to make any real world diff.
6. As for gear oil, the studies do show that you are far better off with a Synth oil (unless the OE spec calls for something different). As for my 2K EX, I use OE Fluid in the trans. It's cheap and I just change it more often than I would Synth.
Don't get me wrong, Synth oil is great stuff. It is better than Petro oil. It just has its place and use. Most people are just wasting their money. But then again, this is only my opinion.

Re: Oil Changes
i use dino oil blend (valvoline maxlife) with lc20 additive and it lasts 10k miles. i change it every 6 months tho cause of the filter.
Re: Oil Changes
If you take it to a shop make sure they are using the correct weight oil. Many shops dont carry 5w-20 or charge more if they do carry it(firestone). I brought my car in to a shop only 1 time and found out they used 10w-30 by the sticker on the window. I went inside and said my car takes 5w-20, why did you use oil not recommended by the manufacturer. They shrugged and said you have to pay more for that kind. I wasnt given that option as I sat there waiting in the lobby. My point is if you can learn to DIY, then do, because youll know its done right and youll spend more time waiting in lobbys than if you had done it yourself during football halftime. I use mobil 1 and my 02 civic has ZERO smoke even after sitting for days at 105k miles. Just my 2 cents
