majority of the time I do not have time to do it on my own so quick lube places here I come. but I choose what I want put in of course

Rep Power: 0 I only do my own I have a specific way I do mine that I feel makes a motor last longer. #1 I only use k&n or bosch(any high end filter will work)"not fram"the fram filter i feel is not a good filter just look at the oil holes in the top side by side with a good filter. #2 I always(important) pre fill my oil filters with oil, I feel that this helps the motor when you first fire it after oil change. I usaully fill it all the way up and let it sit over night. #3 I have used alot of different oils.......this is my first honda and I use what honda puts in from the start castrol gtx( i use the new start up version)5-30.

Rep Power: 0 for performance wise, a quicklube shop put in 5w30 (chevron) and my car was sluggish esp at top end. i went there once and thats about it. its been 5w20 castrol syntec ever since 5w20 from castrol came out.

Rep Power: 0 Does the 1.7 engine work well with 5w30 and thicker oils? I would have figured that there would be a lot more windage losses due to the higher viscosity and tighter engine tolerances, as well as increased fuel consumption.
Can anyone tell me about their personal experiences with thicker engine oils?
Personally, I just bought 0w20 Mobil1. I figure that oil should hold up pretty well, even when I'm driving hard. I took my car to the dealer for the first oil change at 3500km (it was 4 months), but I'll be doing my oil changes from now on, except for the major check-ups. I've been doing my own for years.

5W-30 should be okay for our engine. The 5W-20 & 5W-30 are very similar. I've been only use Mobil 1 5W-30 all year long in my car ever since my first oil change. If you drive your car hard, 5W-30 is a better choice than 0W-20. 0W-20 is too thin for hard driven engine in my opinion. As for the gas mileage, I use my car on local & highway combine daily & I'm getting about 25mpg.

I tried a thinker oil once in my civic. Didn't see many advantages, but I did see a drop in MPG by about 3-4.

Rep Power: 0 Thanks for the imput guys. I think using 0w20 or 5w20 should be good for the foreseeable future.
I guess the best would be to use thicker oils only if you start to burn oil and you have to top it up too often, but realistically I don't think any of us have to worry about that until we hit somewhere around 180000miles or so.

Rep Power: 319 fram oil filters suck...although they do have anti-drainback valves and bypass valves its about as bad as a wal-mart filter which does not have either of those valves for when ur car is off or when ur filter gets clogged...i use AMSOIL 0W-30 full synthetic severe service engine and an AMSOIL filter...they work awesome no problem and such with it

and 4 qts of 5w20 Royal purple oil (listen to the manuf. they designed the engine's cleareances..They know it needs 5w20 Use 5w20...now winter conditions is a different story) Anyway
I live in cornelius..its aka lake norman.....Rich Area...I asked for a quote on 4 qts in this area and they wanted 8.75 a qt!!
But I ended up goin to another town mooresville and i paid 5.75 about 24.XX with tax

Rep Power: 452 I have a question. I have been using Mobil 1 10W-30 for over 50,000 miles now and was wondering if it would be ok to switch back to 5W-20? I was just wondering if I will do any damage to the engine if I do that? the temps in the summer get up to almost 100 and down to about 30 in the winter here. I used to think thicker oil was better, but after going through school, I learned that it wasnt.

Moble1 0-20 = $4 qt when on sale at autozone/pepboys
I have my local shop do it. They charge $12 (1/4hr labor) when I bring in my own stuff. I used to change my own, but I make a mess.
