Vtec Engagement??

I feel like an idiot by not know this, but does anyone knoe exactly when the Vtec comes on in our cars. I've got the 2002 civic EX 5spd. I thought I remember someone saying around 4200 rpm's, is that correct, or am I wrong?

i think, the owner of VAFCII said that our VTEC engage at plus minus 3000RPM, it depends on how you accelerate..

if you floor the pedal, it might engange at 2800RPM..

they said to trust that number...cos' that actually the real setting..

It's not up in the air. If you really want to know, it's different depending on how you drive. It is centered around 3K rpms. If you want later I can read the last engagement points off of my vafc.

when accelerating hard it kicks in around 2800 RPM and when accelerating slow or cruising it comes on about 3200 RPMs.....VTEC indicator light showed this to me anyways, and I have a 2002 EX Coupe (Manual)

Zen Master is right... Vtec on our D17 kick in anywhere from 2800 - 3600 (i've noticed from that dumb light) Vtec on our cars does pretty much nothing, but its really not up in the air. Our cars have no lift like the DOHC Vtec motors do.

we will never know the vtec engagement point unless you get a vafc 2 and set it because we have stage 2 vtec and it turns on depending on how hard you push the pedal and weather and engine conditions

Those 6th Gen Si' have no low end power though. So that is why it kicks in so strong once in lift.

um u know nothing, you get loads of torque when the vtec is not engaged doofis, if its set too low then you dont get enough, it depends on what kinda engine you have, you want the vtec to engage when the torque curve goes down on a dyno graph.

What do you mean VTEC does nothing? hello, we have only got one valve on the intake until vtec kicks in (alright the larger valve opens a little with out Vtec, but barely enough to count). You must be driving a HX or something. If VTEC does nothing, try turning it off and tell me how your car feels around 4000 rpm when it can't breath. And yeah our motor isn't going to be like a K20 motor, it's smaller and designed for economy, not for speed, the EX motor just has a little more pep. Or you can drive an LX and compare it to the EX, but then you still have 2 intake valves opening fully.

And yes, i agree the USDM B16 have no bottom end. try CTR cams and a '98 JDM ITR final drive, I had that in my EG and it had a huge power band.

Oh yeah, the VTEC engagement, it happens at 4300 untill the motor adapt to your driving. So during break in or around 1.5-3K miles it's at 4300, then if you drive what the computer sees as agreesive, it will drop the normal Vtec enagement point to the ranges said above. It's call a Progressively Interagetd Mangagement system (I can't spell so I don't try... lol) but anyway I know a guy that help desing it for Honda. The computer basically alters a power curve made of the last 1.5K miles and uses that as it's guide for Vtec engage ment and a few other things.

I was comparing it to B series (vtec) and K series (i-vtec) motors.

also.. on a side bar... everyone (in the Honda world) I've talked to and even after doing my own research: Don't adjust your vtec on any vtec motor unless you are putting on mods and increasing your redline or other various things. Vtec is setup like that from the factory for a reason, you might feel some performance gains bumping it up on a B series but thats it - you only feel it but it doesn't put down real numbers and in many cases slows you down. I dont recommend VAFC's unless you have a highly mod`d car (im not talking about just bult ons) or if you just want to watch your vtec use a vafc you'll be much better off with a SAFC.

I'll agree with that. Remember Honda has millions to throw into R&D, APEXi just spent a few thousand and developed some generic thing for all VTEC cars, I definatly think Honda has the upper hand on a mostly stock car. And I agree our VTEC (the SOHC) is nothing compared to any DOHC VTEC motor. But I can certainly tell when my vtec kicks in.
