My friend has a 97 civic dx or hx coupe, he claims to have a V - tec engine and brags about it. The engine is very small, doesn't say its vtec, and doesnt look or sound vtec. Regardless of what anyone tells him he continues to believe that its V - tec. How can I prove to him that it is or is not V - Tec without taking it to a dealer or mechanic. someway to close this argument. If anyone knows how to answer questions, its 7thgenmembers.

just look for the vtec solinoid it should be that hard, it has a green connector to it, and is the only green one on the block. go and show him yours. every honda is almost the same. esp the b and d series. oh yeah its in the upper left hand corner of the block
It obvious that your friend is a dumb@ss. Who gives a **** if its Vtec or not..... the car is still slow as hell unless it boosted or a sh!tload of engine work.
Only ricers brag about a car being "Vtec" when they have no clue what it is or what it does.

Vtec is the best. I have it on my ex and when it kicks in--the car pulls like crazy. Rpms go up twice as fast. If you don't feel it, something's wrong with your vtec power.

It's funny that you say the bragging part...one of my friends does that with his 04 EX....he thinks that he's the sh*t cause of the vtec, i had my uncles subaru impreza 2.5 rs one day and I showed my friend what was up...when we got back to his house, i asked him where the vtec was at...it was funny, maybe you had to be there...
OK
some people said that our civic's VTEC kicks in at plus-minus 3000rpm..
NOW....how to do that? why is that?
do you HAVE to kick your gas pedal to the floor in order to do that?
is the VTEC actually engaged when you FLOOR the gas pedal (from launch)?
If i accelerate NORMALLY to 3000rpm, will the VTEC kicks in? that is....MODERATELY push the gas pedal to 3000 rpm?
IF I HAVE to FLOOR the gas pedal in order to kicks in the VTEC....than I assume that I've never engage my own VTEC....
why? because usually, I race my car to (at max) 6000 rpm by moderate push to the gas pedal...
i haven't exactly floor the gas pedal...

Actually it works both ways. If you floor it to redline, vtec will turn on around 2800rpms I believe. If you just accelerate to around 3500rpms, it will kick in around 3000rpms. It is either throttle dependent or rpm dependent.
It comes on alot more than you would think. If you're past 3k rpms, it will come on. If you're on the highway doing 70mph, it will stay on.

Aha..
very very nice information, thank you very much, gearbox....
holy crap......not good for the gas...
can u turn off the VTEC while doing roadtrip with the VAFC?
it will save gas, right?
