spark plugs?
StraitShot Auto Performance
Hey all I have a 2003 honda civic i've got a full cold air intake and just recently got an exhaust. i put a lot of miles on my car right now after almost a year i've got 30,000 miles and before i put the exhaust on i started to see a decreas in my gas mileage and a lack of power i've done some general tuneup stuff and checked everything i never go past 3000 miles on oil i use a synthetic oil and i have tried to find spark plugs to replace them but i can't find anyone except the dealer who sells double platnum i know i can get iridium online pretty cheap but i don't know if i can run irridium on a stock ignition.
also i have a problem of when i push my car harder my exhaust manifold gets red hot even in the cold ny winter. nothing else in my car get's overly hot just the exhaust manifold temp gauge doesn't even show a prob. could this be due to the exhaust intake or something else like spark plugs. i'm stumped with this.
Thanks
Kris

Don't know about the exhaust manifold problem, but it won't hurt a thing to use Iridium plugs in the stock ignition. I've had mine for many months with no problems. I doubt it'll cure your gas mileage problem unless the old plugs are really dirty, fouled or damaged. You won't notice much or any horsepower difference switching from Platinums to Iridiums. It may feel smoother, but that's about it.

Check sparkplugs.com for double platinum. They're supposed to last longer than irridium, since both electrodes are platinum.
I have NGK iridiums and they work fine. Much cheaper, too.

I've heard NGK are the best plugs for honda cars. And yeah, I got all those benefits with my iridiums, BUT my stock plugs were bad at 20K. Denso can make those claims, but you will never notice a difference. Numerous dealers say to stick with NGK regardless.

go to sparkplug.com as suggested
BUT I suggest spending $12 on spark plugs. the iridiums and expensive platinum (like the ones we have stock) aren't worth it.
a $12 will work just as well on a stock application like urs.
exhaust manifold are suppose to get hot.
the engine is pretty much exploding and the hot exhaust fumes are leaving the engine.. of course the exhaust manifold gets hot even in the cold. if it doesnt, then you either have an aftermarket header that has some coating that works super well, or ur engine isn't running.
intake or exhaust didn't do anything.. its most likely always been that hot but u've only notice lately.
as long as temp gauge dont show any problems i dont think u would have to worry, especially if you dont hear any exhaust leak, or smell any exhaust leak...
I'm fairly certain ur exhaust manifold is fine though. they're suppose to be hot. heh.
damn i'm saying the same crap again and again.

the heatshield to literally turn red? if he's saying that then I duno.
i can see a turbo manifold getting red hot.. but i duno about the stock ones.
althoughthe stock color is sorta red/orange/brown anyway.. not the heatshield though.
if the heatshield is turning red hot then I would think thats quite hot. i'm surprise its not melting a bit then.
more input from other members in cold region might help.

Um...yes to new plugs. My stock double platinums were bad at 20k with tons of carbon all over. I checked NGK and their double platinum plugs were way too expensive. I just got some iridiums for half the price ($27 for all four). NGK Iridium IX.

thanks for all the input. and no the heat sheild isn't getting red but i'm not talking about a slight red i'm talking a brilliant bright red. i've talked to some other people and they don't see a prob with it either but thanks to all who have replied and for anyone further in this post asks no i don't know how i got so many points with so few posts
Is your CAT glowing red too?
I have heard of a plugged Cat getting cherry red and still allowing the driver to go down the road.
It would also explain some poor gas mileage...
It should be free to get it checked for flow at any dealership... food for thought.
