mandrel vs crush bending?
ok i know this is sort of a nub question but how do you identify mandrel bending from crush bending?
i work at a parts shop, and we have oe replacement pipes, but where it bends there is sort of a wavy section almost like its overlapping on the inside corner, but other pipes have bends and its not a completely consistant diameter, it doesnt look like it overlaps but is slightly narrower than the straight sections
are they both crush bent?

you pretty much got it, from my understanding, mandrel bent pipe typically is made by using a pulley type wheel and a lever. as you pass the tube through the pulley you pull the lever down to whichever degree you want the bend. this keeps the diameter consistent throught the bend in the pipe. im not familiar with the process for crush bends but it does have creases on each bend.

Righto... Like they said, Mandrel bends are a consistant diameter thru the bend, with no internal or external compression ripples. Crush bends create a ripple on the inside of the bend. There are shops who do a high quality crush bend using a filler to keep the diameter as consistant as possible but ultimately Mandrel is your best bet for a quality bend.
there are 3 types of pipe bends...
1.crush bending with the ripples that sucks
2.compresion bent tubes have a smoothe transition, but the pipe still gets smaller through curves
3.mandrel bent, there is NO loss in diameter through bends, but you cant get it done at a machine shop, it has to be manufactured a certain way.

phatcyclist, you can go to any descent muffler shop and get a good custom madrel bent exhaust. It does not have to be manufactured. It is all about the machine you use to bend the piping. Mandrel benders are more expensive than crush benders. I got custom cat back 2 1/4 stainless mandrel bent for 200.00
You could mandrel bend yourself if you had the machine to do it...

i just had a section of my tanabe srm cut off and custom piped to go around the progress rear sway bar, but that section is crush bent...the job was done in a rushy manner, so the pipe is really deformed, but it does the job, and doesn't bang on the swaybar. Is that bad? Will that section of the pipe affect performance? Can i take it somewhere to have them mandrel bend that section so it looks better? ^_^
Hondaluver: where'd u get urs done? and how much?
Thanks
