I'll be posting a DIY on how to add the chrome pieces from various 7thgen models (AC vents, door handles, e-brake, shift boot & ring, and gauge rings) to a 2k1 later. It will cover your question assuming the '02 is the same as an '01. Anyways to answer your question, it's quite easy assuming the '02 is the same as an '01 (I know the '03/'04 are different) and here it is...

1) Just use some muscle and twist and pull the e-brake button at the same time. It will come off as it is glued only and not super super strong, but pretty strong. If you still can't, wrap some rubber band around for more grip.

2) To get the ring, you'll need to take off the rear/top of the center console first. Once that is off just twist and pull forward the entire e-brake handle and cover. Again it is glued, but will come off rather easily as long you twist the front of the e-brake handle a lot as the ring has a clip to the handle about 2 inches back. Do this with the e-brake up.

3) Once you have the whole handle/housing off just twist the ring out of the handle.

On the '03 and '04's the button is actually screwed on, so just get something grippy and twist. The handle and housing part is not glued and will slide right off once the button is unscrewed. Taking the ring out of the handle requires a lot of muscle and bending/puling the ring out from the handle/housing.

Well, hope this helps and good luck.

And so then you can replace it with generic ebrake handle of your choice?

I had to cut mine off, but even doing so, I found that the release button was too large to fit inside my new handle, so now I'm stuck with an original e-brake handle that's been cut at the base, and a $40 blue ananodized carbon fiber handle that I want desperatly to install sitting in the corner of my room...

Sorry to thread jack, but to those who have switched out your handle, and your new handle did not come with a release button, how did you get the stock button to fit???

i have a 2004 and the ebrake handle is much different it is just an ordinary grey handle with a small button....it is not black with the silver button... my momo ebrake handle should go on easy with the adaptor and boot except the push button may look kind of odd being grey and pointy while the handle is black and silver....any one install this on their 04???
