WARNING! Pure noob questions. Please help.
I just bought my first car, it is a 1999 civic cx hatchback. I was wondering if anybody knows for sure what engine is in this car? I know that it produces about 105hp but I cant find what the propoer engine model number is.
How can I make this car go faster? I know that its a non-vtec engine so its porbably not worth it but without an engine swap how can I make this car a bit quicker? I was thinking intake/exhaust/headers/performance chip of some kind? I would like to stay away from forced induction and nos..this isnt a race car but I just want it to be a bit more peppy.
Thanks alot.

Pop the hood and look for the stamping on the block. It will say B16 or D16 or H22 or something along those lines- a Letter followed by two numbers. Probably a D16 or a D15

Pretty sure the 1999 is a d16y8 but you can find a list of engine codes from Google. You can do that on your own. It's definitely not H22, that's a Prelude and the b16 was the older series....I believe. I find the worst engine out of all the late Civic models is the D series which is likely what you have.
You don't necessarily need to make it faster, you just need to put the power at the appropriate levels for your driving styles. First you can reset the ECU and have the computer relearn how you drive, this will help a little since the owner before you could have been a grandma. Then get a cheapo air intake filter from Ebay for $40, then go to your local auto parts store and pick up a K&N filter for it for $40 and mate the 2 like an elephant **** in a wirey pink vagina. This should change your power band for the better, then you can work on headers or exhaust but you have to be real careful with those, it's going to sound like trash if you don't do it right or go cheap.
My other suggestion is to forget about making the car faster and just make it more fun to drive. Who cares if the car is fast? Upgrade your suspension, shifter bushings, seats, and take some on ramps doing 80 while your passenger screams about not wanting to die. That's much more fun.

Yeah the D is pretty shitty in all respects, but the ZC is pretty good from what I try not to hear over on d-series.org. haha
You could always turbo it, used turbo parts are getting really cheap now-a-days.
There is always intake/header/exhaust for basic performance. Then you can go and do all your visual upgrades- tinting, lips kits, ect. Suspension is a big thing that will make you either love your ride or hate it.

Another great post! ROFL. I'd rep but it won't let me.
Look around for a supercharger. You'll probably be able to pick one up for cheap and should give you some decent power.
