Fuel, Oil, Cleaners & Other MaintenanceExtending the life of your Civic requires the proper fuel, oil, and cleaners, along with other regularly scheduled maintenance.
Hi guys, recently bought new honda civic. Went to change oil, my wife took car and drove. Long story short, the oil cap somehow loosed and oil was splitting everywhere. She told me she drove around 25 30 km with check oil warning. How much damage is done to the engine, any idea? Will it be ok or car is ruinned?
Put oil in it then start it up. Are there any new noises? Like knocking from deep inside the engine? Or loud tapping from under the valve cover?
No, there wasn't any noises. I drove the car to the same service, ordered new cap, because this one is lost. But didn't hear any noises. What are the chances of damage? My wife said she drove with 90-100km/h on a flat road, no hills, no corners. The car is still in the service, so can't start it now.
Could have been enough oil to keep it from destroying itself. The fact that it still runs and you don't notice any noises is a great starting point. Put 50-100 miles on it then do an oil/filter change. After draining the oil, look for metal flakes which would point to bearing failure.
If the oil looks like glitter (gold flakes), that's bad news.
Thanks for replying me. From the service they told me, its all good. Is it possible to be sure everything is ok without driving it at least for 50 miles.
You can drain the oil now and look for glitter. Or make some short trips staying relatively close to your house. That way if something goes wrong you're not far away.
It;s good it starts, better that it did not seize while she was driving it, and there are no mechanical noises...Did it overheat ?
1st thing when you noticed the problem you should have done, as soon as you noticed the issue was pull the dip stick and check the oil level... but that's history now.
Like said in another post its not likely you lost enuf oil to cause much damage other than a mess.
