Burning alot of oiiillll :(

Hey guys, lately I've been burning alot of oil, about a qt every 800-1000miles, I have to add about a qt ever two fill ups, which is generally about every week and a half my car has 127k, but it was running fine until (call me stupid) but I didnt know how to change my oil about 4months ago, so I had a friend do it, well he put 3qts extra of oil in it, and I drove about 500miles with that much extra oil, but everything was fine just when I checked the dipstick I was like WTF!? and figured out how to drain some, and rechanged the oil all together. Well since then I've been burning more and more oil every month. I use the factory recomended 5W-20, and today I just got LC20 (thanks to gearbox's sig) and it seemed to make the car run smother but I doubt it will help the burning oil. So I've been reading around and seen that some problems may be the valve guides or piston rings? I'm not sure. The car doesnt smoke blue or anything, I can just smell oil, especially for the first minute of running. So basically I dont know how to fix it or do any engine work, and so I'm about to go back to the dealership but I know they'll rip me a new one for engine repairs, how much should I expect to pay and what do you think is wrong? Anyone have any solutions possibly? Sorry for the long post but thanks much guys!

Re: Burning alot of oiiillll :(

sorry to hear. you may have permanently damaged the motor if the pressure dropped or the oil started foaming. try switching to a hi mileage 5w30 oil like valvoline maxlife, and keep using lc20, but dont expect miracles. make your friend pay for a new engine. you could have also ruined the engine seals which may start leaking later on. the sad thing is shops overfill the oil all the time, usually no more than a quart, but it still pissed me off so much i learned how to change the oil myself and have been doing it since last year. i had a rear main seal start leaking 2 yrs ago and ever since i started changing my own oil, the leak has completely disappeared. thanks to me actually taking the extra 10 seconds to check the dipstick before pouring in all the oil. i think i finally figured out that alot of times they go by what the book says for oil capacity, but when i actually add oil i barely use 3 qts instead of the 3.8 the manual says. its just mechs are too lazy to actually check the dipstick. and many do not even add oil to the new filter before installing. you may want to change the plugs as a precaution and leave the oil a tad bit below full but keep a good eye on it every time you drive. maybe it will clear up after some driving. also check your intake and be sure it didnt suck in any oil from the pcv valve. take the valve out and clean it off too.

Maybe try using a xtreme engine cleaner. And flush out ur engine. That might work. And use thicker oil like 530 or even 1030?

If your not smoking but you smell oil,you might have a bad valve cover gasket. Check you antifreeze for oil, or under your oil cap for a milkshakey look, that is a sign of a blown head gasket.

Re: Burning alot of oiiillll :(

Hey thanks guys, so it sounds like maybe I need a new motor that really stinks, especially since I wont be able to do it myself. I've looked on ebay and stuff and a motor like I had is about 600-1000 dollars, but how much labor would the average place charge to put it in? And I've noticed K20a3's going for like 700ish, from the HB Si's, I tried searching for how much it would cost to swap a K, but all of those threads were written a long time ago (the ones I found) and the prices were way off compared to now when everything has more miles and is older. Am I still looking at paying over 3k for a swap? I'll try switching oils, how would that help? Isnt that just a thicker oil, so would it take longer to burn? And when i look in my oil cap there is no milkshakey look, but where is the antifreeze for our cars? Sorry for the newbie question, is that right in the front, right by the radiator? And thanks lowlife, you understand how i feel, lol. Like I said now I'm the only one to change my own oil. Thanks again guys
