My 97 EX over heats periodically. It doesn't do it all the time. It does it when I turn the AC on. Someone told me it might be the thermostat. I think the fan doesn't kick on automatically like it used to. My radiator was empty and I didn't know; but I filled it with coolant, the problem continued.
Anybody have advice of what it might be......thanks

Check your radiator cap, and make sure your radiator fins are clean. Does your fans turn on with your ac? When you refilled it did you follow proper procedures to bleed the rest of the air out?

Like they said ^ If your fan is not turning on, check the fuse or follow the wire to see if it shorted out.
As for the thermostat, it should be failsafe and if it seized it did in the open position allowing coolant to run freely. None the less it’s a cheap part and easy to replace. Check the water pump while you’re at it, epically at high mileage.
Im curious to know how you ran it down to 0% coolant... Id check all lines for any leaks and burn off. Something is either leaking it out or burning it off either way its no bueno.
Any fender benders lately?

Thanks for the help....
I'm going to check all of these suggestions over the long weekend that I have.
The fan used to kick in automatically and there wasn't a problem; now it doesn't anymore, one day it just stopped. I just happen to look at the temp while I was driving one day and the needle was at the very top....
I never got into any accidents with the car. If there is a leak than it is small cause I let it sit for a couple of hours after I refilled it and it didn't leak in my drive way.
When I find out the problem I post what it was. Thanks
