chugs/dies when throttle applied?

chugs/dies when throttle applied?
i have a 98 base model 4 door civic and the car chugs when idleing minimally but when any throttle is applied the engine wants to die the more instant gas you give the more likely the engine is to die which doesnt take much... i thought it was the fuel pump but i just replced that today and its still doing it 
any help greatly appreciated thought i would add the car is bone stock
