Timing Belt change- is it due?

I have just brought a Civic 1.6 VTEC Sport (03) and it has done 39,000 miles. I am not sure when the timing belt and other associated parts mentioned in some threads will need to be replaced. The manual talks about 5 yrs or 50,000, which ever comes first. As this seems to be a very costly job, I fear that I may have a lot of unexpected costs coming my way. Any advice would be good.

Just inspect it. If you spider cracks or if you touch it and it feels dry/brittle replace it. I have 77,000 miles on my 01 and its still fine. I even spent some summers is the AZ desert.

You need to take alot of things off in order to check the timming belt.Unless you are doing it yourself, otherwise it doesnt worth to find a mechanic to inspect it. Just change it, it is more cost effective.

Re: Timing Belt change- is it due?

A timing belt, water pump, accessory belts, and coolant is replaced every 8 years or 105,000 miles ...AT least that's when our dealership recommends them.
