Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

well sorry to bump an old thread, but my motor mounts are torn and i read thru all the esmm threads. for now i want to just do the front mount with esmm but after reading these last few posts, i dont wanna be stuck with not being able to put the mount back on from bolts not lining up. is there another solution aside from jacking the motor from the oil pan which i would never do?

also, do these just push into place and how do they stay secured? and can you push them in with the mount already on the car?

hmm does anyone know if the front es mount will fit an auto trans mount? i guess they are different part numbers and shapes. and on the website it says motor mounts are for manual trans only.

auto

manual

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

im done! just finished putting the esmm on the front motor mount. it fit the auto mount no problem and pushed right in. im very happy i was able to do it and the cuts and bruises were worth it. the oem one was torn ofcourse, i read that es recommends getting a new mount but do you guys think this is really necessary? the stock design is terrible and i see why it breaks so easily and often.

a few tips for anyone trying this cause i almost ran into some problems. first, i tried to remove the bolts. the top one and the middle one thru the bushing were easy to break free using a 3/8 inch ratchet and a cheater pipe. the bottom one i could not get leverage at all and had to jack up the front of the car. after all bolts were broken free enough so the ratchet could be used, i lowered the car. next i followed green01civic4d's suggestion of supporting the engine from the oil pan. i found a nice piece of triangle wood board and put that inbetween jack and pan. jacked it up just a 1/2 inch so it was securely supported. i then loosened the top and middle bolts no problem. the bottom bolt i ran into a serious problem. using a socket wrench, eventually as it got maybe half way loose, my ratchet got stuck in the frame! took me a long time to reach around and turn the socket to tighten mode from the back and retighten the bolt so i could take the ratchet off. i used a crescent wrench to remove that bolt lol. then the mount lifts out. i sprayed it down with silicone grease and pushed on the mounts. went in very easily. getting the mount back on the car is tricky, because its a much tighter fit when you go to put the es upgraded mount back on. just push it in place, the middle bolt goes in easily but you are gonna have to wiggle the mount quite a bit until you get the top and bottom bolts to catch. once they do, tighten them all back up. i didnt have enough tools to actually torque them, so i just played by ear and used the cheater pipe to tighten them securely.

test drive: vibration is very acceptable at idle. i would say 1/4 as much vibration as the stiffy torque damper set to its softest setting. there is some rumbling bass sounds, but nothing to write home about. the seat vibrates just a TINY bit, but the best part is everything goes away as soon as you step on the gas. drives just like stock with no vibration of any kind. i didnt get a chance to really push the car but it feels solid. overall great mod, i dont think i will do the rear inserts. this is a great compromise and most people will not even notice the vibrations.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

while we are on the topic of motor mounts...does anyone know how much movement in the engine mounts there should b if the oem mounts are good? this is goin from reverse to drive to reverse. when i was doin it at school with my teacher, the bolt that goes in thro the motor mount seems to move about inch or so(both front and rear).

do ES even make mounts for the auto trans rear mounts? only ones i saw was for the manual.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

the kit i bought (front and rear) was for manual. the fronts fit my auto perfectly, i suspect the rears do too but i dont want that much vibration. some engine movement is expected with stock mounts, thats so you dont feel the vibration inside the car. but this front mount is so easy to break people here have gone thru one every 10k miles ive heard. its a really weak design. and i didnt wanna pay $50 for a new oem mount just to have it crack again so i got the es poly mounts. im a firm believer in fixing things for the long term. same goes for other rubber bushings. i already have the rear sway, front lca, and soon to have front sway all in ES. then i wont have to worry about them falling apart for the rest of the car's life.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

hmmm. well i already bought replacement front mm from rockauto($27) so gonna stick those on when i get a chance and hope it helps my situation out a bit.

the rears im not too sure of. tried to get em out but had no luck. such a tight area and i dont really want to unbolt my exhaust system cause most of the bolts are rusted.

the rears look pretty similar to the fronts, design wise. the only thing i think is different is the tranny mount. im prob gonna do a lil searching for the designs of the front and rears, manual to auto. hopefully i can figure it out and i might just replace the rears with esmm.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

the rear is pretty strong and is a pain to get to. usually it doesnt need replacing. the front one is the worst. the two side mounts are also pretty strong (theyre not torque mounts so they get much less stress on em). the es instructions say you should use good oem mounts with their inserts which is prolly a good idea. i just didnt wanna spend the extra money and wait another week to get the part, so i used my old torn one. maybe i will put in a new one someday but it was such a time consuming job.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

yeah there are two inserts per mount that slip into the stock mount, one from each side. they are only for the front and rear torque mounts, not the two side mounts. that looks like the right part.

other things i noticed after installing the front mount inserts, the engine no longer makes rattle sounds when shutting off the car. all i hear is a nice hiss from the intake where before it would go clunk..clunk.clunk and then turn off. also feel a bit more feedback from the trans and shifts feel smoother. i dont know if its in my head, but the exhaust sounds noticably quieter than before and i dont think its from re-painting it.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

I put my front inserts in about a month ago. Mine was torn. All I can say is its the best 20 bucks I've ever spent. Car starts better. A small rumble but I don't really notice it any more. Vibration is at a minimum but you know if you aren't giving it enough gas.

I had a hell of a time trying to get the rear mount out so I gave up after breaking a socket. It wasn't torn any way. If I have some time this summer I'll give it another shot.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

put the front esmm in todai along with the new motor mount. def feels a whole lot better...no more jamming into gear or hard shifts. still can feel it a bit but def a whole lot better. there is a bit of vibrations at idle but nothing i cant handle. they were def a pita to put on and aligning the bolt holes. all in all not bad but will see tomorrow when i head to school and work.

on a side note, the old front motor mounts seem to be the cause of all my problems or at least part of it, pretty sure the rears is the other one. inner part of the mm, where the esmm slides into, is all ripped up and torn.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

yeah ive been discovering a bunch of stuff this simple insert fixed. its not good for the motor to move around. you were able to feel the rear mount? i couldnt get my hand thru the metal housing around it. but i suspect replacing that one with esmm will cause a whole lot more vibration.

Re: ESMM install...help (DIY pg 2)

best way to get a good view or atleast feel it is taking off the intake and looking down at it from the passenger side. not sure on how it would b removed tho. my guess is to get it on a lift and removing the downpipe or at least moving it out of the way. im prob not gonna put the rear esmm in since the vibrations right now is just tolerable.
