My First AutoX - I'm now addicted
My First AutoX - I'm now addicted
So I got there at 8:30 and registered, tech'd and was in the STS class, just like I thought, but I knew 4 other people that were going to be there, and all in my class, so I thought it would be a good time.
Anyways, there were 3 heats, 3 runs a heat in the morning, and 2 runs per heat in the afternoon.
Everyone there was pretty much running mid to upper 40's so here are my times...
Morning
1st - 54.339 - I hit my goal of staying under 60
2nd - 51.991 - I started getting a little more aggressive
3rd - 51.571 - I thought I was on top of the world, haven't hit a cone yet...
Afternoon
4th - 51.841 - got too cocky and hit a cone
5th - 49.992 - This made my day, I got into the 40's and my goal (albeit a high one) was to get under a 50 for the day.
In any event, I loved it and am now addicted, so I'll be doing this a lot more this summer.

we have another convert....
and a 40 is a 40...
Glad you had fun, and aslong as you keep bettering your own time, all is good.
If you want to do a little reasearch on driving and autocross, Pick up the book "Secrets of Solo Racing"

Oh man, if you only knew what you've gotten yourself into.
Soon you'll have three sets of wheels/tires, start neglecting your girlfriend/boyfriend, and look forward to getting up at 5am on the weekend to drive 2+ hours to the track... I think we need to start an AA (Autocrossers Anonymous) organization.
Welcome to the club, and no matter what everyone says, be proud of the cone gunk on your bumper and the shoe polish on your tires.

soon you wont care what your car looks like if it runs ... you'll take off any show goodies you have and sell your sexy rims for some 15s (like im going to do) ... but its so worth it cuz damn its fun!
Last sunday I finished near the middle of my class sunning STC .. great times!

I keep thinking about selling my street use 17s for another set of 15s, except this time they will be 15X7s....
ya we are a sick bunch...

well I wanna keep my 17's, I just got them, and they only weight 18 lbs at the moment, so they'll do.
I do plan on getting some lightweight 15's though, so 3 sets of tires won't be so bad, winter / street / comp

Ya they will do for now... BUt they are slowing you down.
17s need to weigh about 15LBS to have the same inertia as the stock 15s (That weigh 20LBS..) Your Unsprung weight has improved (Better handling), but your hampering your acceleration and braking. Physics is fun!

I could go in to detail if you want, but the basic principle is: the farther a weight is from the center of rotation the more effort is needed to get that weight to spin or stop spinning. so, for every inch bigger your wheels are, the lighter the wheels have to be in order to have the same Inertia
Inertia = the resistance an object has to a change in its state of motion.

ok, what you said made sense...
So basically you want the smallest diameter wheels you can get with the lightest weight.
What size tires are we talking about though, how big of a sidewall do you really need?

The general consensus for STS is to run either the Kumho MX or Flaken Azenis in 205/50-15, on preferably a 15X7" wheel.
Typically you run "shorter" tires to give you a better gearing (Shorter) to give you better acceleration.
