Tall AutoX'r

Not sure if this is the right forum, so if it's not can a mod please move it.

So I'm trying to get into autoX, and I thought I heard awhile back about tall people in 7th gens not fitting in their car with a helmet on.

I'm 6'6" and I was wondering what options seat-wise I have to sit lower in my car. I'm going to be on a budget, so tossing 1.4k on Sparco's isn't really going to work, but if there are decent seats that would keep me in the STS class and enable me to sit in my car with a helmet on, I want'm

Any thoughts / suggestions welcome - except telling me I'm too tall to AutoX

Get some Tenzo seats and set 'em to the lowest height setting. You'll be fine...I think. I'm just over 6' and I can't believe the extra headroom I get with my Tenzo seats all the way down.

Depends what model you have. If you have an EX the roof is a little shorter. I am 6' 1" and i fit snuggly in my EX. I might suggest getting a set of seats, but take your time at choosing them. I think they can't be less than 15lbs or you will have to weigh them down and make sure you can fit in the car with them. don't want to throw away cash. I would first try to see how you fit with a helmet and stock seats first.

6'2", my helmet bounces off the damn roof the whole time im on the track. It gets rather annoying.

Edit: What about the 02+ SI seats?? Would they be legal for STS? Those are the ones I want.

It is just helping you keep still and strengthen your neck muscles

and yes they would be legal. they are stock seats. They just can't weigh less than 15lbs and they have to be padded in certain areas. Check the rules in the autox faq on moutons.org or ask the people at your next race. It is to keep out the really lightweight plastic seats. that would be considered weight reduction. If they find your seats + brackets weigh less than 15lbs, say 13lbs, you can PERMANTLY attach weight to each seat. That means it has to be epoxied or welded onto the seat.

6'1" EX driver here....for racing, I just move the seat up a bit and tilt the back a bit further than normal. It's a bit weird at first, but you'll get used to it, I did and now that's how I drive all the time. I fit perfect with that set-up, lol, and I never hit the roof anymore. But I too am looking into getting a set of Tenzo's...so we'll see.

Good luck!

Ahhh... to only be 5'10" . But actually my head will hit the roof sometimes too.
I would think the best thing to do is get a new seat with side mounting brackets, and bolt it flush to the floor... that should buy about 4-6" extra head room.

^^^ me too. I basicly put the seat in the full upright position. at 5'11" my head is up against the roof the whole time. I have a sun roof, so i kinda shift my body to the right and put my head in the extra space.

I know nothing about racing seats cept that i think i want a set....do they recline or are they in a fixed position?

I also am concerned that they are not comfortable during long drives.

When using side mounting brackets and bolting to the floor, would I be able to use sliders with them? Or am I taking away any ability to get into the seat behind me from the drivers side?

Not like it really makes a difference, I can't really fit anyone behind me now, I'm just curious.

Most, if not all, of the aftermarket seats you can buy nowadays DO recline and you CAN buy sliders for them. So getting to the back seat is not a problem. UNLESS you get the CF seats...but I wouldn't do that unless you've got a TON of money to dump into some seats, lol.

haha, yea, don't think I'm looking at quite something that extravagant.

Right now I'm hoping to find some idiot's totalled Evo or STI and rip the seats out of it at a junk yard, but more than likely the junkyards are gonna have that already done.

But it's worth a shot.

I'm 6'3" and I have to hold my head a little to the right to keep it comfortable. I find my helmet almost rests IN the sunroof. That's always an option, just pray the car doesn't roll... (Keep it on the pavement)

The best way to see if you're going to have a problem is just to borrow a helmet and see how it pans out.

Would the Si seats be any shorter? I'd be interested if they actually helped me get my head out of the roof.

well I guess I forgot to post how it went...

I went to the AutoX and borrowed someone's helmet, and I fit perfectly fine...

Because of how I normally drive, with my seat leaned back, the addition of the helmet was not a problem, I didn't even have to have my head stick out of the sunroof, which I know is probably bumming a lot of you out

In any case, let it be known that giants can AutoX in stock seats. I'm attributing most of it to the fact that I have long arms too
