Bought my first Civic in 15 years
Hey everyone...
Like the title says my first civic in 15 years.
I've owned a '78 (hatchback), '79 (not HB but with a little trunk) and '81 (4dr sedan) and now after 15 years my '88 Toyota 4x4 pickup has finally died (RIP)
So now I've got a '99 Dx Coupe purchased from the original owner who had it serviced by Honda right up to the day I bought it. So it's a pretty clean car inside and out. The engine bay is dirty but no leaks and the fluids are clean.
Funny how some things are still the same on Civics ... even 15 years later. Like the gas gauge is always on and I think they make the biggest temperature gauge I've ever seen in a car. LOL. Other then that it's a Porsche compared to any other Civic I've ever owned.
The old ones were always pretty quick but that's because they lacked metal, and suspension and safty of any kind. More like powerful go carts really. This 99 coupe has the most impressive suspension I have ever driven in any car to date.
I'd forgotten how much fun Civics are to drive!
Hopefully I'll learn some stuff here
Cheers all!

^thanks!
I like this car more and more every day.
Here's a few more pics of it
I'm very into the clean stock/retro thing these days so I'm probably not going to modify it. Clean the engine bay and I'm trying to find a cluster with a tach and that's about it. Well probably a set of better then average summer tires/rims too, I guess.
Anybody got some tips about the best approach to clean the engine up? I've used the super duper toxic stuff on engines before and I'd like to avoid that route.
My bike will give you an idea of how much I like the stock/retro thing. It's 30 years old and factory original right down to the pipes. (well, except for the Avon Venom X tires LOL)

I found a pic of My '81 Civic so I thought I'd post it up. This was the last one I drove 15 years ago. I still love that car. One of my all time favorites. I traded it in for the truck.

Re: Bought my first Civic in 15 years
Well after 9 months of ownership. The only work I ever seem to need to do is cleaning and polishing things.
I've put 12 000 kms on it since i've bought it and the only maintenance has been the timing belt, shifter bushings and changing the oil, filter and air filter.
This is the best car I've ever driven! 12 years old and feels like brand new.

it's an '81 440 LTD
I think '79 was the first year for the LTD and before '79 it would have been just a KZ. Those are the flat seated one's that every makes into custom cafe racers.

< Jealous.
Bike looks absolutely mint, was dealing with ICBC's collector plates department relatively simple? I know they can be an absolute nightmare.

Re: Bought my first Civic in 15 years
You know I thought it was going to be hard to get the plate but really all I had to do was submit the photos that I posted above and a 3 page form proving I had another vehicle (daily driver). Three weeks later I got a call saying my plate was here. I hear bikes are easier then cars though. I guess I'll tell you in 12 years when I'm registering my '99 Civic.

Well, it's been almost 3 years now since I bought this car. Best used car ever hands down. I bought it with 165k kms and it has 201k kms now. Still doesn't leak/burn oil and has only needed a set of upper control arms and regular oil changes so far.

Re: Bought my first Civic in 15 years
I just bought my first Ford EVER!
lol, this is my winter/ski hill beater until it dies or I crash it.
I know nothing about Fords at all but it has a 4.9 (yes 4.9) inline 6 that the world (or the internet at least) seems pretty impressed with.
Probably 1 mile to the gallon. They say in the teens but I'm going up 5000 vertical feet in 4x4 so probably more like 5 miles to the gallon. The price you pay to go snowboarding

Re: Bought my first Civic in 15 years
Nice! Looks like it will serve its purpose well
I have 91 F-150 that gets used as a beater. It's got the Triton V8 in it, so I only drive it when I need to. It was free so I couldn't say no.
I would love to have a Toyota Tacoma (90's) but they are pricey and I don't need a truck all the time.

Re: Bought my first Civic in 15 years
I loved my Toy, awesome sport truck but terrible utility vehicle. I've wanted an F150 for a long time now because I have renovation work to do that requires hauling heavy stuff. This poor truck isn't going to have any easy days under my command.
The first thing I did was disinfect the steering wheel. Next I hosed the entire cab down with soap and water including (especially) the bench seat and let it dry for an hour. I took a can of Lysol (fresh linen) an emptied the entire thing into the cab and closed the doors.
Tomorrow I'll clean that up and throw some AutoGlym on the plastic.

You know, as I was working on my car today I have really been considering selling it. I guess buying the old F150 has really reminded me how much I've missed my Toyota 4x4.

A little mid-winter wax and detail for the old car today. Ezone says my car is a rust bucket but I just don't see that.

I know!...phfft..what does ezone know? ...and 45 min of driving later it's dirty as crap again. I'm just addicted to the way water beads on it after a wax...

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: Bought my first Civic in 15 years
Damn, throw me under the bus...
When did I say that about the car?
I remember commenting on all the rust under the F150.....
Maybe I just expect anything more than 10 years old to have rust around here.
Hell, I've seen several 8th gens rusting the around the wheelwells already.

Meh, I'm just bored lately. Trying to start a fight or argument or something just to keep things interesting.
...but remember when my lower radiator hose clamp rusted off? You made some comment to the rest of the car not being far behind. I will admit there is some rust underneath the front sub frame but still not tragic at this point.

Go ahead and proceed with that bus, and please drive over this speedbump slowly.
My truck might look OK from above, but there's plenty of rust if you look underneath it.
My Buick had a family of birds living in one rust hole while it was sitting in the parking lot at work.... I gave it to my kid, now his wife is driving that car all over the US making 500-1000 mile trips at a time.

Re: Bought my first Civic in 15 years
birds? your lucky...
My Toy has been sitting for a couple years now and I went to pull the tires off it last fall for the Ford. Wasps had been building nests in the rims and behind the gas cap door (and god knows where else). It's getting hauled to the wrecking yard in a couple months.
