18 ohm alot?

I'm in the process of testing 1 watt LED and i calculated that it needs an 18ohm resistor. the problem is after a few seconds the resistor gets too hot to hold, and would prolly destroy itself quickly anyway. Is 18 ohm even enough to make a difference or should I run the led without resistor?
