i have a honda civic 2000 dx and one day i noticed a small chip on my windshield that was never there before [note: i am not the original owner of the car but the chip happened after i bought the car]... i bought a windshield crack repair kit from autozone but i never had the time to use it... i have never used anything like it before and i am an auto repair novice

before i could use the kit, one day after cold day the chip expanded to a light crack that is across the whole windshield (see pictures)

the crack is only on the outside of the windshield and cannot be felt from the inside

please advise the most economical/efficient/recommended course of action:

a. is there some overthecounter repair kit i can use, or even the one i already have
b. is it minor enough that i can ignore it
c. do i have to replace the windshield
d. some other option i havent thought of

if i have to replace the windshield what is the best way to do this? is it a DIY project and i can go to a junkyard and get a compatible windshield or do i call a professional... if i call a professional can i get a windshield from the junkyard and give it to them and they only charge me labor? please advise

also... i read somewhere on the internet insurance covers stuff like this sometimes but i have liability-only insurance so im pretty sure this doesnt matter for me but i just thought i would mention in case someone knows something

No fix for that, it's down low so you may be able to leave as is. Dab some RTV in the rock chip to seal, and make it smooth for wipers.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: windshiled crack repair please help

If you find it must be replaced, let a professional auto glass company handle it from start to finish, including getting the new windshield glass.

Unless you can DIY from start to finish, it's cheaper to just let the pros handle the whole thing.

Re: windshiled crack repair please help

yup the chip repair kit was there to stop it from cracking further you dropped the ball on that. the professionals will come out and replace the windshield in your driveway or at work thats your best bet because it will come with a warranty for cracking and most likely a lifetime warranty for leaking. the professionals don't really cost that much probably around $300 dollars for everything thats your best bet. shop around for the best deal online.
