Re: Trials of buying a used engine.

Got engine out of the main car. Took me way longer as I was bag and tagging every bolt etc.

Started moving the wire harness and 7 out of the 8 locking tabs on my fuel injector connectors snapped off instantly. Seems 15 years baking in Texas sunshine made them good and brittle. One other connector snapped too, did not have that issue with the donor car.. Need to find some OEM Honda zip ties to secure them I suppose.

Took apart the transmission and replaced the ISB and all the seals today My magnet pretty much looked just like one I saw in Youtube video. All in took me 3 hours which I feel is realistic for first timer. My bearing was good but at least I got a new seal in the process.

If you look closely you can see two Honda engines and a opened up tranny..

Spent a lot of time fretting about trying to get the shift forks back in right spot prior to assembly. Helpful hint, don’t worry about it. once you get the case back together it is trivial to move the forks to align them before you put in the spring / *****.

Re: Trials of buying a used engine.

Rainy day here in Texas, Got the engine off the stand, tried to take the flywheel off old engine and my lack of a proper 17 mm 12 point socket sent me out to Napa, then autozone and finally success at oreilys.

Took fuel rail back off the new engine so I could use nylon zip ties on each injector since the connectors all snapped.

After about 10 tries get the clutch as perfectly centered as I could. The alignment took allowed way to much wiggle room so I had the bright idea to just leave it loose and install the transmission and then do the final tighten through the starter hole.

Pretty sure that plan woulda worked if I had a 10mm 12point 1/4swivel socket.. Alas took it off and fussed with it for 10 or so tries till I finally got it perfectly centered.

Decided to take advantage of the break in the rain and tried to drop the engine in. I left the drivers side mount on, lowered the engine onto the pin and then spend a lot of time trying to get the transmission mount on, then tried to attach the front mount and it was just too far off to get bolts in. So I decided to bolt down the drivers mount tight and then look into prying options to get front mount aligned. As I was tighting down the drivers mount I realized it was not fitting flush, perplexed for a minute then realized I put the sedan bracket on instead of the coupe. Swapped bracket, reset trans mount and then front mount and drivers went right in.

Thats about as far as I got, rain was annoying at this point and it was dark out didn’t want to deal with it anymore for the day.

Re: Trials of buying a used engine.

Completed the installation. Left the spark plugs out and pressed the pedal all the way down and let the engine crank over for 30 secs then gave the starter a 10 min break and repeated and after about 20 seconds into the second cycle the oil light turn off. Repeated once more for 30 seconds to be sure oil had a chance to circulate then I put the plugs in and she fired right up.

Messed up the idle relearn twice... Skipped the very important step of shutting down the car after letting it sit undisturbed. After first failure learn as soon as I touched the gas the idle would bounce from 800-2000 rpm. Figured I screwed up the idle valve by cleaning it so I swapped in the idle valve from the donor. Reset and redid relearn and touched the gas again and back to wonky land.

Reread the instructions.. reset and relearn, shut down, then drive. Works fine now.

Seems the combination of rockauto new hard rubber mounts and possibly two missing 10mm sockets might be contributing to a slight buzzing sound around 900rpm in the cabin. I will look into another day.
