What to look for when buying USED rubber?

I just got a call.... Someone may be able to get me some used winter rubber for cheap... So, I'm not keeping my hopes up in terms of quality, it's such a cheap price....

From what I understand, it's ONLY the rubber, off a 1.6EL. (They specifically said winter, so I hope it's not OEM garbage.)

Used only 1 year.... I would know how to look for camber wear.... How deep should the treads be after only going thru one winter? (Don't give me measurements, give me stuff like "You should see the moosehead on a quarter!", you know, for dummies )

Would 1.6EL rubber work on my 1.7EL? 1.6ELs have 195/55/R15's stock, I'm running on 185/65/R15's stock.... ?! That equates to 5% too fast if I run on them....

What would I have to buy? The rubber tubing thing inside the tire, and some steelies, right? How much would those cost me? Labour?

Is this even a good idea? Would I need to get the rubber balanced? (Or is this only a rim thing?)

hey....

I can't seem to get the tire calculator to work but here is what I run and I believe it is five percent bigger....

stock 185/70/r14

winter tires 195/65/14

They worked great all last winter!!!

There is no rubber tube in the tire, they are tubeless!
Steelies are cheap, like 40 bucks each, and I dunno about mounting and balancing the tires in terms of labour cost.

I'm usaully lazy to answer long zhit but I'll try...Every tire has a tread wear indicator on it running opposite the treads and accross the width of the tire which will tell you how much is left. IMPORTANT-Check the sidewalls for any cracks or bubbles. LAst thing you need is a belt which is tearing inside and one day BOOM on the highway. You should stay within 3% of overall height as a rule of thumb but for winter I wouldn't care really. Your speedo will just be of my like 2kmh or something. You'll need steelies, go to a junk yard don't buy them anywhere else, they'll charge you way to much. The mounting and balancing is usually like $10-$15 bucks per tire/rim. The baalncing is done with the tire on the rim. Usually where the belt is joined inside the tire is heavier so they put that opposite to the valve stem to baalnce the weight out-that's just FYI you don't have to worry about that.
