i was wondering if it is possible to take the top half of the CAI pipes and stick the filter on there for the winter. i read a whole lot about the rain but what about the deep snow?

Yeah, you can do that. The bottom tube is larger than the top though, so you might need to slide another rubber ring, like the connecting piece in between the top tube and the filter so it will have a tight fit. I hope that makes sense.
