ok... my front bumper is being re-painted right now. Someone pulled out in front of me and I couldn't stop in time. Their fault, their insurance is covering it, but I got a couple of estimates, all around $400-$500 to re-paint it. That's sanding, prep, primer, and new paint.

yup, and dont forget, shops actually charge for removal and replacement of a bumper...i saved 120 on my paint job by taking the bumper off myself and taking it to the body shop.

I dinged a support column in a parking garage. got a couple of scratches on the back of the door on the passenger side. The estimate that I got to fix it was like $1300. that seems a little high to me... they said that they had to remove all the molding on the passenger side and remove the quarter panel window and then like paint a large portion of the car. and on top of that.. It would take them like a week. Does this sound right to anyone?

had my rear bumper scraped and scruffed. went to two body shops for estimates. one said that whenever a bumper is bent, warped, or otherwised screwed-up, they have to get it "reconditioned" which means sending it to some molding shop that heats it up and gets it back into original factory specs, including fill-in on any cuts or holes. Including sanding and paint, they quoted $450 and would need it for 3 days.

Another place said that a new bumper, unpainted, only cost $50 or so more than a reconditioned one and totally unaware of the first estimate, came up with a price of $501, so they both seem to be on the same page.

I once had some small scrapes and deep cuts in one of my plastic bumpers and took it to one of those "bumper only" repair guys who come to your house. He charged less than a $100 but the paint definitely was slightly off. Don't want to do that anymore if I can get back to original shape.

When you talk about fenders and doors, you are into the steel and that's a different subject. KA-CHING.

If you want to save some real money, spend about 200 on a decent gun and buy your supplies. Pick up a few books on paint and body and learn about the whole process. Practice painting with a flat white on junked car parts until you get your technique down. You'll always have your paint gun and anytime you ever have any damage you can always repaint the parts yourself. The amount of money I've saved since I began painting is well over a couple thousand, it's well worth the time if you want to learn.

the cost of repair of a car is intirely baised on where you are. It vairies from state to state, and city to city. Here is an example. To repair a front bumper (Correctly not cheeply as in take the bumper off and prep it properly) the repair will run you some where around $500. I know this because My family has owned/Opperated a collision repair shop in San Diego for 17 years (Stroyer Bros in Escondido). Here In Las Vegas that same repair will Run about $400. I know this because I had to have it done. So what you have to do to make shure you arn't getting scrued, is get as many written estemates as you can and look around the repair lot. Then pick the one that seems the most reasonable and the Most Professional. Look at their equipment (Paint booth, Frame Rack ect....... Does it look new/Top of the line?) Ask what type of paint they use (Organic or Synthetic) AVOID SYNTHETIC AT ALL COSTS!!!!!! Some good brands are (Glasserit, Dupont, and Spies Hecker.) Will they use a Single stage or a Two Stage paint. Two Stage is what the Factory uses and is Far Supirior to Single Stage Paint. Will they Paint the wole bumper or will they just paint where the repair was. what type of warrenty do they have ect........

Good luck with the repair...

I Most definily Do not recomend painting the bumper your self, Their are many factors that affect paint ranging from ambient tempriture to how much flex agent to use. then Sand and buffing comes in. and if you have a run? then what. Then you have to deal with dust, proper cleaning of the painted serface, weather or not the paint is metalic or not(very important because even if you match the color exactly, the metalic paint will look different then the original paint due to how the Metalics lay down on the meterial.), color match, blending(If you want to make a metalic repair look perfect you have to blend it in to the panle next to it, and if you blend then you need to color sand and polish.) ect ect ect.........
Not to knock andyman97, But because of not blending, I can tell you every spot that you painted. And its not because of the part being aftermarket/Not standard.

Its best to leave the paintning to the Professionals.

Is that so? What parts did I paint? How do you know that I painted anything on my car? I'm not trying to start a flame war here but don't assume that you know what I've done if you have no idea. Just so you know, the only parts of my car's exterior that I've painted were the front bumper, tail lights (I agree that they are not an exact match due to the opaqueness of the lens, it'd be impossible to match perfectly) and rear trunk molding. And as far as the bumper goes, the pictures I have aren't even after I painted it. In fact, the entire kit from the pics were painted by a shop in LA by someone ak knows, professionals, eh? Funny that you think it doesn't match yet you say have it done professionally and it was painted by professionals.

ak now has my old stock bumpers which were repainted by Honda mind you and they are even a worse match than the kit I have in the pics.

As far as painting goes, I know how to paint, I'm not having a knowledge contest because I am sure you know things that I don't and that's fine. All I was suggesting was to pick up a book and read about it to learn how it all works, like you were saying, there are lots of variables that affect paint and I agree. But it isn't impossible to learn about like alot of people think. That was my whole point.

I could tell you where My car has new paint on it too, and I didnt say it looked bad.(and most people cant tell the differenc anyway) Its just that with out blending a Metalic color it is impossible to make it match perfictly even between panels(not just taillights). It deals with how the Metalic part of the paint lays down on the painted serface. if you dont blend between the newpainted part and the panels next to it the difference in metalic sheen can clearly be seen. the color can be matched perfictly but the Metalics will make it different.

I mentioned it not to say that your car's paint looks bad. It dosent. I like the way it looks, but because I'v worked on cars for so long I spot things like that quickly. Most people would never be able to tell the difference.

Sorry about that.
