What You Replaced Those Stock Tires With....

Hey all,

After having one of those crappy a$$ stock Firestones blow out on me for no reason, and also experiencing the absolute lack of traction they provide, I was looking to replace them.

I'm just wondering what brand/model everyone went with when they replaced theirs, and how they have felt about them. Please keep it to tires replaced on the stock wheels. I'd like to get some suggestions relative to my situation.

Thanks!

kjl

I replaced the Firestones with Yokohama Avid Touring (185/70/R14). They're the same speed rating (S) as the stock tires on the DX, LX, and HX. The Avid Touring have long treadlife, low noise, low cost, and pretty good wet traction. You can check out http://www.tirerack.com for survey results and test results on this tire and others.

EDIT: had to fix link

I got Michelin X-One's (stock size 185/65 R15). If you have Costco membership, you can get their X-Radials (which are identical to X-One's) at an even better price. These are great tires if your want to keep your car stock: they're quiet on the highway, have good grip in rain, and have one of the highest mileage ratings around (100,000 miles).

I got the same tires as Ronin for about $70 each at a Merchant's tire dealer. I used to really curse the handling on my car (which was worse than my 87 Si) until I got the Michelins.

MangoEX should not be trusted
I want to get Pirelli P400s... they were rated # 1 in both DRY and WET grip on consumer reports tests, so I went ahead and bought them for my moms Toyota, and they are absolute WICKED BEASTS in both dry and wet. Unbelievable traction. I also have experience with Goodyear Eagle GTII, also a very good tire.

Oh and saying those firestones are crappy is an understatement, the car feels VERY unstable while doing any mild maneuvering at moderate speeds, you can feel the car breaking traction from underneath you...... wants to fish tail during spirited driving.

Yokohama Avid H4 195-60-15. I regret not getting a 55 profile but they do well as a stock replacement. There is better. I'd look into a Z rated tire if you really want good traction instead of an H-rated replacement. The stock profile is ugly. Haven't you noticed how FAT the tire is? Especially on a DX/LX. Wider/lower profile tires provide better traction so pick a good size. I wouldn't know what to pick for a 14 inch rim though. If it's 15, I'd go with 195-55 or 195-60 if you think 55 is too thin from the side. Anything below 55 IMO is too thin. A 50 series tire would look like a mini 17 inch rim with a 45/40 series profile.

Low profile looks and handles better, but it'll throw your speedo off and rack up miles on your odometer that you didn't actually travel.

If I'm not mistaken... it is fixable, correct?
