engine noise!!
Hey guys,
I have a 2002 Civic Si (Ex in US) I have about 29000km on it. When the car idles and i rev it to about 1500rpm and let go of the gas i can hear rateling noise comming from the engine while the rev goes down... Only mod to my engine is a short ram intake... I didn't notice any difference in performance or anything.. jost wondering if any of you guys heard of this before.

Could be this: excessive play in camshaft

I had the EXACT same problem. To save you the trouble of searching for my fix, the intake is most likely causing the rattle. The filter sits right on the top of a metal mount. When it shakes, the filter causes a rattle sound. I just put a piece of cloth underneath the filter to stop the noise. If you want to test this, just put your car in reverse or let it idle on an incline. You can see the filter shaking when it makes the noise, and pressing down on it causes the rattle to stop.

yup,try to look at yor manual when it is scheduled to be adjusted, valves tend to rattle when they are a little loose, but w/ a simple adjustment the rattling sound will be gone
hope that help's

Is it possible for a new car to have loose valves. My '02 EX has a little over 3000 miles and when I accelerate I can hear (with my window down) a rattling sound coming from the engine. It almost sounds like a diesel. I took it to my Honda dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong. At the time though I didn't know it could possibly be loose valves, so I didn't ask the mechanic to look at them. I'm pretty sure they didn't check the valve on their own because they only looked for loose engine parts (such as the heat shield) and they had my car for less than an hour.
Should I take it back to the dealer and have the valves looked at under warranty? I don't want the service guys to think I'm an idiot and tell me that this isn't possible on a new car. If it is a possibility though I will take it in.

it seems like its too early for your valves to loosen up,but have it check by your mechanic, the rattling sound of the valves are normal, but if its too loud, better take it to your honda mechanic
