Shifting between 2nd and 3rd makes noise
it seems like when ever i have to pull out quickl and i pretty much rev it all out in 2nd and then shift quickly to third i get a slight kinda crunch.......i've had sticks before and never had this problem. it has done it brefor i got my short shifter as well and with it. anything u guys know of? i know our cars are cable acuated so they not a smooth but is that all????? its only when i have to accelerate fast
hmm.. i think i have the same problem, except only when i shift from 1st to 2nd quickly. no matter that the clutch is completely pressed to the floor and the accelerator is completely released, the gear shifting doesn't feel smooth, like there's resistance. but if i do it more slowly, it's smooth. it's really annoying, and i know it's not b/c of my shifting skillz since my friend noticed the same thing and it doesn't happen when i drive his protege. i think i'm going to eventually take it to the dealer, hopefully it just needs to be greased up or something simple that can be fixed.

Hey guys,
Just to let you know, I had the same problem as well at 11,000 miles.
If you race your car, the quick shifting or holding down the accelerater down when shifting between gears spins the clutch faster than the next gear should be spooled up for will result in burning up the synchros.
If you do a nice gentle shift between gears the noise is gone or minimized. But, at higher rpms and shifting gears faster you will hear a cruch or grind sound.
Honda knows that this is a problem with civics that have "agressive drivers" So, play dumb and get your car to the dealership before your warranty runs out. Honda had to replace the whole transmition to correct the problem. And if you are nice enough or a con like myself...with some effort you can talk them in to installing a new clutch from the factory at the same time since the car is going to be all apart and that the dealership can claim more money from the factory.
Good luck.

i've noticed also that it seems to occur less often when i shift quite slowly at lower rpm. but sometimes it happens when i do it slowly too. i'm at the dealer right now also to have my defrost problem fixed (air coming out the front vents on defrost only mode) and the service guy is telling me they're supposed to do that and that i should close the vents manually each time i defrost. nice Honda quality. of course i told him that's not acceptable, so hopefully they'll do something about it. man i don't know about these hondas anymore.
I have the exact problem with my 2002 Civic EX MT, when i get up on it high RPM's shifting from 2nd to 3rd sounds like im grindin gears, no matter how much i push down on the clutch. So i'm wondering if i get a new tranny from the factory with this problem occur again or not?
just came back from having wasted half the day at the honda dealer and all I can say is that i hate my dealer. i told them about the gear shift problem and after trying it out, the guy tells me that yeah he can feel it but that's just the way all the civics are. and then about the air coming out of the side vents on defrost only mode, he tells me that's just how all the civics are (big surprise there). and so i complain and the service manager comes out and tests it himself, and before i know it he's revving up to nearly 6000 rpm before shifting from 3rd to 4th (although i told him it only happens from 1st to 2nd) and i'm like WTF ARE YOU DOING??! and on top of all that, the service guys were all pretty condescending and rude. man, i can't wait to get my stupid little survey letter from Honda Motor. one thing for sure, never gonna buy a f***ing honda again! hopefully, the lexus dealers will be nicer when i get my next car.

I have had many hondas. Hondas do not have $100k trannies in the them. If you shift ulta-fast and slam the ish out of it, you are going to grind the synchro. That's the way hondas are...

i don't really shift ultrafast, but it's really no fun to take 3 seconds to shift gears. not to mention it does it even when i try shifting slowly also. i was mostly p'ed off b/c they acknowledged that there was a rough shift feel from 1 to 2, but they refused to do anything and just said it's normal. they seemed to think i wanted a new clutch or transmission put in. i just wanted them to do some exploratory surgery type thing and see if anything was not lubed enough or if something was causing resistance in there. but it's not a huge deal, i'll get over it someday...
pestlnc - yep, that sounds EXACTLY like mine, i also shift around 2500-3000. guess we have to live with it.

Don't live with it!!! take it to another dealer and tell them what the problems are, or tell the dealership who sold it to you that they need to fix it since it is under warrenty or you will have to report them to the Better Business Bereau. They will fix it.
Otherwise, give it another 10K miles and you will have to pay to fix your tranny...costing YOU about $2,500. Don't be a fool.
