It's perfectly safe to do it - the ECU just needs to have it's memory regarding the air intake revised.... reseting it just sets everything that to a "default" setting for the car. If this was a problem with automatics, then you could never change the battery on the car! Not good

man, funny note concerning fuses and ecu.

last night i put on a new exhaust, so i wanted to reset it. i left it out for about 10 minutes...but then had supper. I went back outside to move my car and put another one in the garage...i freaked out, cuz it wouldn't start!!! then i started laughing my a$$ off at how stupid I was, cuz I forgot to put the fuse back in.

make sure you put the fuse back in

Out of curiosity: after you reset the ECU, how long does it take to learn the computer with new components? is it still a tank of gas? or is it just the first few times to redline?

The ECU does adjust itself eventually. That is why when some people add something and the check engine light comes on then they drive around a bit, it goes off. It is better if you just disconnect the battery when installing an intake. because of the excess air the engine will have to adjust. You can get away with not resetting it. I didn't reset it for my exhaust and it has been fine, not check engine light. To reset the ECU take the negative cable off the battery for about 10 minutes. Then put it back on. Your radio will reset itself so I hope you guys have your code to get back into it!!!

Yes reset every time you do a mod...this is the easiest way: I recommend (if you have a radio with presets) opening your fuse box and pull the fuse labeled "F.I ECU" (Fuel Injection ECU) pull this for about 10 minutes (I just pull it while installing the mod). After putting it back in start your car and DONT TOUCH THE GAS for 10 minutes, turn off, on, off, on and your good to go.. No waiting for it to learn while driving which will run lean due to lack of fuel if installing intake(not too lean obviously..but still bad)

The ECU would not be able to set your Air Fuel ratio properly...your idle is going to fluctuate after resetting it, this would be how it learns if you start messing with the throttle it will set wrong and run like garbage.
