Engine ticking or rattling noise at cold start in Reverse or Drive [solved]
Hi, I have a Honda Civic 2012, 105K. It started to do a rattling sound at cold start, when I move from Park to Drive or Reverse. If I move to Park again the sound dissapears. After the engine gets warm, the sound disappears.

You can hear the rattling noise appearing and disappearing, as the car is moved from park to reverse and back.
Do you have any ideas what it can be?
The engine works fine, all liquid levels are good.

open hood, have someone look at it while you start.
screwdriver can be used as a stethoscope to pinpoint noises
if nothing found, lift car and do same under car.
or take somewhere to diagnose.

I’ve watched the video he posted. Mine sounds identical. Also happens only when cold, also happens when I put it in drive or reverse. Once the car is warmed up it doesn’t happen…. So I’m positive it’s the same thing, not something else…
I don’t have a hoist to lift it up.

a jack will do... Heat shields are around the exhaust, one or two...
or take it to a place that can do for you, if you don't even have a jack...

Could be a sign of a different problem, particularly in reverse. Check out your passenger side motor mounts, both the "dogbone" and the gel-filled ones. If you started noticing excessive vibration when shifting out of park, I'm willing to bet at least the gel-filled one is worn out.

I do have a Jack and I did lift it up and didn’t find anything loose. I am not planning to fix it myself. I’m planning to take it to a shop..
if I know the issue - I can avoid diagnosis fees….
