Cylinder Head woes

2002 Civic EX 1.7 V-tec

The car would overheat & the overflow reservoir would fill with coolant.

So, I bought a remanufactured / reconditioned cylinder head from the internet. I brought (drove) the car & the cylinder head to the mechanic. He switched the cylinder head & now the car doesn’t want to start. He disconnects the crankshaft position sensor & the car will now start with coaxing & has a rough idle. Plug the crank shaft position sensor in & it’s a now start. Try a new Denso crank sensor & it’s a no start. Unplug crank sensor & the car will start with coaxing & the rough idle again.

The technician performed a compression test & discovered the number 2 cylinder has 25 psi. Other cylinders have about 75psi. He suspects a bent valve(s).

Who would like to give input on what might be going on? This is the first Honda Civic he (technician) has worked on. The car is in Korea, so he’s used to Hyundai’s / Kia’s / Daewoos / Samsungs.

My plan, as much as I hate it is, is to order another cylinder head from another company & go back down this rabbit hole. Looks like I’ll be ordering another set of Honda head gaskets.

Agreed try to reuse original head, the new denso sensor may be a fake

Re: Cylinder Head woes

I still have the original cylinder head. The number two spark plug port / threads have some wobble to it. Hence one of the reasons I wanted to replace it. Although, maybe with the head off I’ll have more confidence in doing a heli-coil & not worry about metal shavings getting into the combustion chamber.

I did notice the New Denso Crank Shaft Position sensor from Rock Auto had China marked on the invoice & Japan on the box. But, none the less with the original CSPS in place, the car will not start. It only starts if coaxed & it runs rough.

I’m getting quotes of 400,000 Korean Won (about $300.00 USD) in labor only to rebuild the head. Parts are going to be expensive, due to import costs.

I’m thinking a rebuilt cylinder head again. Any recommendations?
