How to tighten up the compression test fitting?
How to tighten up the compression test fitting?
Hello all. I am performing a compression test on my 05 civic. I cannot get a socket down into the spark plug hole to tighten it up. i tried to tighten it up as much as I can with the compression testing hose, but after slight resistance, the hose just swivels. and when I turn the engine over, all the air leaks out of the socket hole. any ideas?

All my spark plugs look like #10 in this image.

Remove compression tester hose and throw it away !
Buy a fresh set of plugs and install. Drive it until the plugs look ugly again.
(Depending on how many miles it took to foul those plugs, I might just install standard NGK plugs, not platinum)
It's an oil burner? Remember to check and add oil on a regular basis.
What was the question again?

Thanks for the reply. It is an oil burner, big time. about a quart every 2000 miles. plugs and cat are fouled because of it, I was trying to do a compression test to determine if it was the rings or valves. but i can tighten the compression tool to the engine block, air seeps out immediately after engine stops turning.

Throw away the tester hose before you get it stuck and can't get it out (THAT'S gonna ruin your day for sure)
Buy or rent another if you need to.
A compression test will never tell you the condition of the (stuck) oil control rings.
The oil rings could be missing completely and you'd never see it in a compression test, because the 2 compression rings are still doing their job.
One quart in 2k isn't huge (I know it eventually takes its toll though), unless nobody remembers to check and add when needed. Some engines I deal with consume oil much faster than that.
I'd guess it's stuck rings just because it's very common, but if you're gonna pull the head, plan on doing both stem seals and piston rings.
