"Side airbag off" light blinking on and off
"Side airbag off" light blinking on and off
Hello all I have a 2004 Honda Civic LX and I don't see where they could be installed at but there is a name plate on the inside of the door trim of my car that tells me the car has side air bags anyway I notice sometimes that there will be a flashing light between my temp and fuel gauge that lights up saying side airbag is off it will flash a couple of times then go off for awhile then come back on later it will stay on for about a min or so at a time then disappear, it seems to happen more when it rains out maybe that is just a coincidence or maybe it isn't ,does or has anyone else dealt with this issue and how can it be fixed and what might be causing it? Thanks in advance

Extremely complicated system and dangerous to work on. My 05 has had two problems. The drivers belt buckle switch died and the light would come on indicating bags were off. For a while, the light would come on ever now and then. This was being caused by RIP laying her YOGA mat in passenger seat.
The buckle switch was replace free even though car is out of warrant by years. Talk to them sweet, whine, tell them you though airbag system lasted life of car... They may fix it free.

Yes it happens while I'm driving it, I know they had a major recall on air bags and I had my steering wheel and passenger side front bags replaced for free by Honda but I don't think they did anything with the side airbags and I honestly don't even know where they would be located there is nothing I see to indicated a air bag is even present on the sides I'm just wondering if there is some kind of sensor that gone bad or any other possibilities. thanks for your replies guys
Re: "Side airbag off" light blinking on and off
I just found this posting on another forum:
(QUOTE) this is going to sound goofy, but take whatever you have off of the right front seat and you're light should go out. I see this happen when people put laptop computers or backpacks on the empty front seat.
the side airbag light comes on when there is someone or some thing on the seat that is small and the system decides that if it is a person that the person is more likely to get injured if the bag deploys in a collision than if the bag did not. so it decides to turn the airbag off and the light comes on.
the owner's manual has information on how that light works if you have an owners manual.
the light will also come on if someone is seated in the path of the side airbag were it to deploy. that usually means a passenger leaning over to the side or riding with their arm out of the window.
if there is nothing on the seat and no one in the seat and the light is still on, then take the car to a Honda dealer. they did have a recall on the OPDS (Occupant Presence Detection Sensor) that could be the cause. if that is the cause and the car is involved in the recall the part will be replaced at no charge
the only other cause would be spilling something on the seat or washing/shampooing the seat and shorting out the light circuit. I expect that wasn't done.
hope that helps (UNQUOTE)
I do sit my lunch bag and purse on the passenger seat driving to and from work can this be the issue? and I see here also where Honda did have a recall on OPDS is there any truth to this does any one know? thanks in advanced

Don't set ANYTHING in the passengers seat. Set your junk on the floor or in the back seat and see if that solves your issue. Keep your phone away from the seat too, and unplug your chargers from the power socket..

As far as I can tell, from what someone else had posted, the warranty was extended to 10 years or 157k and change miles, whichever came first. Search for the SRS light thread, its related. The Honda service bulletin is posted in that thread. Mine does the same thing, but it's an 01, so no emissions test to get a sticker. The light only goes on and off while the engine is running.

I only found one bulletin mentioned, unless I found a different thread.
OP is beyond any 10 year time limit, bulletin 02-054 mentioned in post 21 of the CEL/SRS/ABS light thread was only for 01-02 Civic and 02 CRV...and according to that particular bulletin the regular 3/36 warranty applied.
Re: "Side airbag off" light blinking on and off
My 2003 hybrid has an intermittent issue with the "side airbag off" warning light. It only comes on when it has been raining. No, there isn't anything in the passenger seat. As far as I can tell high humidity causes a short somewhere in the system. It will go on and off perhaps once every 2 minutes - with no obvious pattern to it. The windows are rolled up and nothing is wet on the inside of the cabin.
