Noise that sounds like a horse galloping.
I've got this noise and I cant for the life of me figure out what it is. You can hear the noise pretty much at any speed from 25 or so and up. The faster the car goes the faster the noise. It always sounds the same (thump, thump thump) about every 2 or 3 seconds depending on speed. It sounds to me like its on the front passenger side, but i cant be certain. Its definitely in the front though.
I got under the car and checked everything looking for leaks and broken CV boots and what not. The only thing that stood out to me was the front passenger strut dust cover was ripped and figured that is what I was hearing. I replaced both front strut with new strut assemblies and also changed both outer tie rod ends as they broke when I was removing them while changing the strut. Oh car has 70,000 miles on it, just FYI.
If you are going perfectly straight you hear the noise, however if I turn the wheel just a little to the left it goes away. If I put the wheel back straight again I can hear it. I can also hear it if the wheel is turned a little to the right.
I dont think its a CV joint as you dont hear the loud clicking sounds when making sharp turns, plus the boots are both still in tact.
I had the wheel bearings replaced a few years back as they were bad and were whining very loudly. I'm not saying they aren't bad again, it just sounds like a completely different sound.
I also checked the brakes and made sure nothing was stuck in one of the tires. It really does sound just like a horse.
If anyone has any ideas let me know. I'm at a loss. I just dont want to start replacing everything under the car and waste a ton of money.
Thanks
