Does the exhaust pipe sound normal?

Hi

2 weeks ago, I had an engine replacement done on my Civic 2009.

Since then, the sound coming out of the exhaust pipe sounds abnormal. I dont hear anything from the inside of the car.

I confirmed with a friend of mine and he thinks also there's something wrong. I am going back to show it to the dealer Monday.

Here is a video :

If you know what it is, let me know.

Thanks

Why? What happened to it?

Um, just how often did you ever sit behind your tailpipe and listen to the soothing sounds of your exhaust.....BEFORE the engine got replaced?

If it doesn't sound out of the ordinary from inside the car and sounds normal from the front of the car, then it's probably not an issue.

Since you don't hear anything in front, then it probably doesn't have any leaks in the front joints.
These are what would normally be taken apart to drop the drivetrain out the bottom, the rest of the exhaust from about the footwell area on back wouldn't be disturbed.

If that video was taken with a cold engine, it will sound different than if the engine is fully warmed up. They can sputter and slobber at times.

I think you might be trying to assign problems to something that is normal, looking for problems that aren't there. Or just now noticing something that has been there all along. (This is not at all unusual in my world!)

I think it's probably just fine, myself.

Compare it to another identical car first......under the same circumstances.

JMHO, YMMV

I bought this civic (35000miles) a month ago. It used to belong to a 64 years old man. The car is really clean!!! I could hear somewhat a weird tapping noise at a cold start coming for the engine. It was hard to believe it is from the engine, specially at that low mileage.

It seems like the timing chain cover was leaking oil previously. The previous owner did not realize it and probably drove the car with low oil level for a while. Winter is pretty harsh over here in Canada. Engine cylinder no 1 and 3 got damaged. Engine got replaced under warranty.

Before the engine got replaced, I did inspect the car a few times cause I wanted to know if there were other issues. I dont remember the sound coming out from the tallpipe was that loud. But yeah, I should compare with another civic. The problem is that unluckily nobody through my family and friends have a civic. That would be weird to ask stranger "Can I listen to your pipe?"

Thanks for your comment.

Oh ok, you're THAT guy. I remember the thread now.
Gotcha.

That little plate with 3 bolts was a common leaker, but it was normally a very slow leak. Most just made some mess down the timing cover over a long period of time, instead of a rapid leak. Simple re-seal would have fixed it if someone had caught it in time.

That would be weird to ask stranger "Can I listen to your pipe?"
And be known as "THAT guy"

Thanks for the info. Other than this slow leak, I have no idea what could have cause the engine to break.

Anyway, anything else works fine.

Yeah, you read my mind. LOL The dealer really wishes that I could be deaf.

Other than low oil level and/or lack of oil changes, there hasn't been much of any common problems that I have seen here (but then I am in a rather small dealer).

Unless it has a manual trans. "Lugging" the engine (very low RPM plus high load) can damage pistons, mostly due to insufficient splash lube at very low RPM.

One or two NCR*/NPF** freakouts are usually ok as long as you aren't wasting a lot of their time because of it and accept their answers.
But do it too much and you might earn a label........
You know you are special when you get labeled CSC***.

Used to have a customer that was a music teacher.
She described every noise or rattle in terms of a tone, like "That rattle is an F#"

Funny you say that....I keep a small harmonica in one of my toolboxes for the sole purpose of getting some of us techs harmonizing in key whenever one is asked to do a tune up.

It's great when done in front of new employees and customers that "get it".
